How to Apply for Staff Applications Engineer

at Antora Energy

🏢 About Antora Energy

Antora Energy is revolutionizing industrial decarbonization with American-made thermal batteries that store renewable energy as heat and deliver it as continuous, low-cost power or heat for heavy industry. Backed by leading climate investors and the Department of Energy, Antora offers a rare opportunity to work on a tangible climate solution at scale, with a mission-driven team and the autonomy of a remote-first culture.

About This Role

As Staff Applications Engineer, you'll be the technical bridge between Antora's thermal battery technology and customer projects, owning the end-to-end technical engagement from sizing and configuration to site layout and cost estimation. This role is critical to converting leads into signed contracts and scaling Antora's impact by building the tools and playbooks that enable the applications engineering team to grow.

💡 A Day in the Life

Your morning might start with a call with a potential customer's engineering team to discuss their process heat requirements, then you'll dive into sizing models and site layout sketches to optimize cost and performance. Afternoon could involve reviewing a junior engineer's cost estimate, refining a playbook for standardized site configurations, and preparing a technical presentation for a customer's investment committee. You'll collaborate closely with sales, product, and project development teams, often working independently but with the support of a small, tight-knit remote team.

🎯 Who Antora Energy Is Looking For

  • Has 12+ years in utility-scale energy projects or large industrial facilities, with deep expertise in either industrial process/thermal systems or power systems—and working fluency in the other.
  • Has hands-on experience with energy storage or utility-scale project development, including site layout, equipment sizing, and managing trade-offs between performance, cost, and site constraints.
  • Is comfortable owning technical conversations with both engineering teams and C-suite executives, translating complex trade-offs into clear business recommendations.
  • Has a builder mindset—excited to create tools and playbooks from scratch and mentor a small team as the function scales.

📝 Tips for Applying to Antora Energy

1

Quantify your impact in past projects: e.g., 'Sized and configured 100+ MWh battery systems, reducing LCOE by 15% through optimized heat integration.'

2

Show your fluency in both thermal and electrical domains—mention specific projects where you bridged the two, like industrial heat recovery paired with grid interconnection.

3

Tailor your resume to highlight experience with site layout and cost estimation at the LOI or investment approval stage, not just high-level design.

4

Include a brief note in your cover letter or email about why you're passionate about thermal energy storage specifically (not just clean energy broadly).

5

If you have experience building tools (e.g., sizing models, automated layout generators) or mentoring junior engineers, make that a standout section.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Emphasize your experience with utility-scale energy projects or large industrial facilities, especially where you owned technical customer conversations.', 'Highlight specific examples of optimizing trade-offs (cost vs. performance vs. site constraints) in energy storage or thermal systems.', 'Mention any experience creating scalable processes or tools (e.g., automated sizing models, design playbooks) that would help Antora grow the applications team.', "Connect your personal motivation to Antora's mission of decarbonizing industrial heat—show you understand the unique value of thermal batteries vs. electrochemical storage."]

🔍 Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • Read Antora's blog and press releases to understand their thermal battery technology (e.g., the use of carbon blocks and heat-to-power conversion) and recent project announcements.
  • Study their whitepapers or technical publications on system design and cost modeling to speak their language.
  • Look into the industrial sectors they target (e.g., cement, steel, chemicals) and the typical thermal and power demands of those facilities.
  • Review the competitive landscape: how does Antora's solution compare to other thermal storage startups or incumbent technologies like natural gas boilers?

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Walk me through how you would size a thermal battery system for a cement plant vs. a food processing facility—what are the key variables?
2 Describe a time you had to manage a trade-off between performance and cost in a project. How did you decide, and what was the outcome?
3 How would you build a playbook for a junior engineer to produce a conceptual site layout and cost estimate?
4 What experience do you have with heat integration design? Can you give an example of a novel solution you implemented?
5 How do you handle a customer who wants a technically suboptimal solution due to budget or timeline constraints?

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't focus only on electrical energy storage (batteries) without addressing thermal systems—Antora's core product is heat, so show you understand process heat and thermal integration.
  • Avoid vague statements like 'I'm passionate about clean energy' without linking to specific experience in project development, sizing, or customer-facing technical roles.
  • Don't overlook the 'builder' aspect—if your resume is entirely execution with no examples of creating tools, playbooks, or mentoring, you'll miss a key requirement.
