How to Apply for Staff Accountant

at FAR AI

๐Ÿข About FAR AI

FAR AI is a nonprofit research incubator focused on making AI systems trustworthy and beneficial to society. Unlike academia, they can move fast; unlike industry, they aren't bound by commercial pressures, allowing them to pursue high-risk, high-reward research agendas. Working here means supporting cutting-edge AI safety work while building financial systems from the ground up in a mission-driven environment.

About This Role

As the Staff Accountant, you will own the entire accounting cycle, from day-to-day bookkeeping to month-end and year-end close, ensuring accurate financial reporting for a growing nonprofit. You'll also play a key role in grant and fund accounting, helping track restricted and unrestricted funds and preparing reports for funders. This is a hands-on role where you'll develop scalable processes and internal controls, directly enabling FAR AI's research agenda.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

You might start your day reviewing transactions and reconciling accounts in the accounting software, then meet with the leadership team to discuss financial reports for an upcoming grant proposal. Later, you could be drafting a new internal control policy or coordinating with the external auditor to prepare for the annual audit. Each day blends routine accounting tasks with strategic projects to build scalable financial systems.

๐ŸŽฏ Who FAR AI Is Looking For

  • Has 3+ years of full-cycle accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit or startup environment, with a strong understanding of GAAP.
  • Demonstrates expertise in grant and fund accounting, including tracking restricted funds and preparing grant reports for multiple stakeholders.
  • Is proficient in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero) and Excel/Google Sheets, and has experience implementing or improving accounting systems.
  • Thrives in a remote, fast-paced setting and can coordinate with external auditors, tax preparers, and leadership while maintaining meticulous attention to detail.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to FAR AI

1

Highlight any nonprofit or grant accounting experience in your resume and cover letterโ€”FAR AI needs someone who understands restricted vs. unrestricted funds and can handle grant reporting.

2

Show your ability to build processes: mention specific instances where you developed accounting policies, internal controls, or streamlined month-end close.

3

Demonstrate familiarity with remote work tools (e.g., Slack, Zoom, cloud accounting software) and emphasize your ability to work independently.

4

Research FAR AI's research projects and mention how your accounting work would support their missionโ€”this shows genuine interest beyond just the job.

5

If you have experience with audit preparation or working with external accountants, quantify it (e.g., 'led two annual audits with zero findings').

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Your experience owning the full accounting cycle and leading month-end/year-end close, with specific examples of process improvements.', "Your grant accounting expertise, including how you've tracked restricted funds and prepared reports for funders.", 'Your ability to develop scalable accounting policies and internal controls in a growing organization.', "Your alignment with FAR AI's mission and enthusiasm for supporting AI safety research through robust financial infrastructure."]
