How to apply for Senior Partnerships Officer - Africa
Prevail Fund
About Prevail Fund
The Prevail Fund is a philanthropic foundation that uniquely coordinates 'big push' funding to tackle ambitious global goals, offering a rare opportunity to drive systemic change at scale. Working here means being part of a collaborative, mission-driven team that leverages substantial resources and strategic partnerships to create lasting impact across Africa.
About the role
As Senior Partnerships Officer for Africa, you will be the primary relationship manager for 5-8 high-potential African organizations, helping them overcome growth barriers and scale their impact. This role is impactful because you'll directly influence funding decisions and provide strategic support that can transform local organizations into major players in their sectors.
A typical day
A typical day might start with a virtual check-in with a partner in Kenya to discuss a bottleneck in their expansion, followed by reviewing performance dashboards for your portfolio. You might then join a call with the technical team to coordinate capacity support for a partner in Nigeria, and spend the afternoon researching policy changes in the region that could affect your partners' scaling plans. Occasionally, you'll travel for field visits to deepen relationships and assess impact firsthand.

Tips for this application
- Tailor your resume to highlight specific examples of scaling organizations, especially in African contexts, quantifying growth metrics and impact achieved.
- In your cover letter, demonstrate your understanding of the 'big push' funding model and how your experience aligns with providing both financial and non-financial support to partners.
- Showcase your ability to build deep, trust-based relationships by sharing stories of how you've navigated challenges with partners or stakeholders in Africa.
- Research the Prevail Fund's current initiatives and mention them specifically to show genuine interest and alignment with their mission.
- Be prepared to discuss your approach to making tough funding decisions, including how you balance data with on-the-ground insights.
What to cover in your cover letter
• Emphasize your hands-on experience in Africa, including any work with local organizations, and the measurable outcomes you've achieved. • Highlight your strategic advisory skills, showing how you've helped organizations overcome growth barriers (e.g., operational, financial, or market-related). • Demonstrate your ability to coordinate with diverse stakeholders, from government officials to technical experts, to deliver holistic support. • Express your passion for the Fund's mission and your eagerness to contribute to a collaborative team driving systemic change.
Research before applying
- Explore the Prevail Fund's website to understand their focus areas and flagship initiatives, and note any specific countries or sectors they prioritize in Africa.
- Read recent news or reports about the Fund's partners or projects to understand the types of organizations you'd be working with and their impact.
- Look into the backgrounds of the leadership team to understand their approach to philanthropy and partnership.
- Review the Fund's annual reports or impact assessments to learn how they measure success and what their funding criteria are.
Likely interview topics
Based on the job description, expect questions about:
- Describe a time you helped an organization scale significantly. What were the key barriers and how did you address them?
- How do you assess an organization's readiness for scale-up, and what data do you rely on?
- Given the remote nature, how would you maintain deep relationships with partners across different time zones and cultures?
- How do you stay current on policy and funding trends across multiple African countries? Can you give an example where this knowledge informed your strategy?
- The role requires making funding decisions. Walk us through your decision-making process for renewing or scaling a partner's funding.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Don't submit a generic application; make sure every part of your resume and cover letter speaks directly to the African context and scaling organizations.
- Avoid focusing only on your desire to 'make a difference' without demonstrating concrete skills and experience in partnership management and strategic advisory.
- Don't overlook the importance of data analysis; be ready to show you can interpret performance metrics and use them to guide decisions.
