How to Apply for Program Lead, Working Groups
at Responsible AIxBio Collaborative
🏢 About Responsible AIxBio Collaborative
The Responsible AIxBio Collaborative (R-ABC) is a new nonprofit focused on reducing the risk that AI-enabled biological tools could be misused intentionally. It sits at the intersection of AI, biosecurity, and policy—a space where few organizations have deep expertise, so your work could directly shape global safety norms. Joining now means you help build the operating model and culture from the ground up, with high visibility and influence.
About This Role
As Program Lead, Working Groups, you will translate R-ABC’s strategic goals into concrete workplans, timelines, and deliverables for multi-stakeholder working groups. You’ll manage senior participants from AI labs, biotech, and policy organizations, ensuring they stay engaged and that outputs are technically credible. This role is the operational backbone of R-ABC’s convening power—your ability to earn trust and maintain momentum will determine whether these groups produce real risk-reduction impact.
💡 A Day in the Life
You might start your day with a virtual check-in with a working group co-chair to refine an upcoming meeting agenda, then spend time drafting a workplan timeline for a new workstream. Later, you’d join a call with a technical expert to review a draft output, and in between, you’d troubleshoot a member engagement issue via email or Slack. Expect a mix of strategic planning, stakeholder management, and hands-on document drafting—all while keeping an eye on risks to coherence and trust.
🚀 Application Tools
🎯 Who Responsible AIxBio Collaborative Is Looking For
- Proven experience leading multi-stakeholder initiatives with senior external participants (e.g., from industry, government, or academia), ideally in AI, biosecurity, or emerging tech policy.
- Strong program/project management skills: can turn ambiguous strategic aims into clear workplans, track deliverables, and proactively manage risks to engagement and coherence.
- Familiarity with AI, frontier technology, cybersecurity, platform governance, or emerging technology policy—enough to earn credibility with technical experts and spot when a workstream is drifting.
- Early-stage startup or new-org experience preferred: comfortable with ambiguity, building processes from scratch, and wearing multiple hats while maintaining discretion and professionalism.
📝 Tips for Applying to Responsible AIxBio Collaborative
Highlight specific examples of multi-stakeholder initiatives you’ve led, especially where you managed senior external participants (e.g., from AI labs, biotech, or policy orgs). Quantify outcomes where possible.
Demonstrate familiarity with AIxBio risks: mention concrete reports, incidents, or policy debates (e.g., AI-designed proteins, DNA synthesis screening) to show you understand the domain, not just program management.
Show you can operate in a startup-like nonprofit: describe times you built processes from scratch, adapted to shifting priorities, or managed up with limited resources.
Address the remote nature explicitly: give examples of how you’ve maintained high trust and engagement with distributed senior stakeholders, including async communication and virtual convenings.
Tailor your resume and cover letter to R-ABC’s mission—avoid generic ‘program management’ language. Use terms like ‘working groups,’ ‘workstream coherence,’ ‘member engagement,’ and ‘intentional misuse risks’ to mirror the job description.
✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter
['Your track record of turning strategy into action for multi-stakeholder groups, with a specific example of managing senior external participants and delivering high-quality outputs.', 'Your understanding of AIxBio misuse risks and why this mission matters to you—show you grasp the technical and policy landscape, not just the program mechanics.', 'Your ability to build trust and maintain engagement with senior stakeholders, including how you’ve handled threats to member engagement or workstream coherence in the past.', 'Why you want to join an early-stage nonprofit: emphasize comfort with ambiguity, appetite for building processes, and commitment to R-ABC’s mission.']
Generate Cover Letter →🔍 Research Before Applying
To stand out, make sure you've researched:
- → Read R-ABC’s public materials (website, any blog posts, press releases) to understand their strategic aims, theory of change, and current working group topics.
- → Research the AIxBio landscape: key reports (e.g., from NTIA, OSTP, or think tanks like CLTR), recent incidents, and debates around DNA synthesis screening and AI protein design.
- → Identify the major AI labs, biotech companies, and policy organizations likely to be involved in R-ABC working groups, and understand their public positions on AIxBio risks.
- → Look into the backgrounds of R-ABC’s founders or leadership (if public) to understand their vision and what they might expect from a Program Lead.
💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics
Based on this role, you may be asked about:
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Being too generic about program management: failing to show how your skills apply to multi-stakeholder, senior-external-participant settings in AIxBio or a related domain.
- Ignoring the domain: applying without demonstrating any familiarity with AI, biosecurity, or emerging tech policy, which would make it hard to earn credibility with technical experts.
- Underestimating the startup context: expecting established processes or lots of support staff—R-ABC is new, so you need to show you can build and adapt.
