Job description

LOCATION: Remote, based in the USA REPORTS TO: Director of Government Affairs and Partnerships COMPENSATION: $70,000-85,000 The crisis in local news poses a severe threat to democracy and the health of communities. Rebuild Local News believes that in addition to improved business models and increased philanthropy, public policy plays a crucial role. Rebuild Local News develops public policies to strengthen local news – and then works on the state and national level to pass effective legislation. Our path-breaking set of policy initiatives, which we advocate for alongside partners, has helped advance effective, First Amendment-friendly legislation. Together, this work has established programs directing millions in funding to local newsrooms across the country. Rebuild Local News also runs the Rebuild Local News Coalition, which unites newsrooms, labor unions, and civic organizations committed to revitalizing local journalism. Collectively, the groups in the Coalition represent over 3,000 newsrooms and thousands of journalists, working together to safeguard the future of local news. We aim to dramatically increase public support for local news through laws on the federal and state level that help support civically important news while protecting editorial independence. THE ROLE The Nonprofit Mobilization Coordinator will lead Rebuild Local News’ engagement and support of nonprofit news organizations. The coordinator will work with nonprofits across the country to ensure they can have real impact on the legislative efforts, including being key parts of broad coalitions we put together to pass ambitious legislation. At the national level, this role is responsible for building programming that supports the nonprofit organizations already part of the Rebuild Local News Coalition and for expanding their presence within the wider coalition. In coordination with our Policy and Government Affairs teams, this position will help engage and elevate nonprofit organizations within state policy campaigns, and will ensure the needs of those organizations are represented in the policies we champion. Nonprofit news is one of the engines of innovation and growth for community news. We are seeking an excellent communicator and coalition builder to focus on supporting and mobilizing these organizations, working closely with our partners at the Institute for Nonprofit News and the American Journalism Project. RESPONSIBILITIES National Nonprofit Programming Design and run programming built specifically for nonprofit newsrooms: convenings, webinars, and resources addressing their particular needs and constraints as it relates to public policy and advocacy. Build and maintain strong relationships with INN, AJP, and other critical organizations to support their member and portfolio organizations. Facilitate training for nonprofit newsrooms on how they can participate in advocacy and serve as a resource for newsrooms doing this for the first time. State-Level Mobilization In coordination with our Government Affairs team, identify, convene, and mobilize the nonprofit news organizations within each state to work as part of broader coalitions to advance legislation. Work alongside state Government Affairs staff to fold organized nonprofit newsrooms into coalitions, and identify nonprofit-specific opportunities or needs as they surface. Build toward mobilizing nonprofit newsrooms for national action in the coming years. Translate policy and advocacy opportunities into clear, concrete, and achievable asks for nonprofit newsrooms and their leaders. Help leaders understand an issue, navigate unfamiliar policy or advocacy work, and identify practical ways to participate. Policy Development Support the Policy Team in gathering input from nonprofit news organizations, INN, and AJP to understand their specific policy needs, and ensure those needs are reflected in Rebuild Local News' policy portfolio. EXPERIENCE Minimum of 4-6 years of relevant work experience, with particular weight given to experience in nonprofit newsroom or association management, business development, and operations Experience working with nonprofit executives, board members, and other senior external stakeholders Experience with coalition-building, partner engagement, or advocacy Demonstrated understanding of nonprofit advocacy Track record of working with large-scale stakeholder networks, including developing member-informed programming Excellent written and verbal communication skills Comfort working in a fully remote or hybrid work environment QUALITIES Passion for the cause of reviving community news Outstanding at building relationships with diverse stakeholders Ability to grasp the complexities of policy in this local news sector Ability to navigate conflict with professionalism Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy and the ability to meet deadlines Comfortable working independently on a fully remote team Willingness to travel as necessary for conferences or events NOTE: This position is funded through a grant currently secured through June 2028.
