Research Lead

• Develop and lead a research agenda that reduces catastrophic risks from advanced AI.
• Build and lead a team executing this agenda, setting research direction and mentoring technical staff.
• Remain hands-on by writing code and running experiments.
• Shape FAR.AI's broader work through grantmaking, convening stakeholders, and influencing AI companies and governments.

This role directly reduces catastrophic risks from advanced AI by developing and scaling safety research that influences AI companies and governments, ensuring AI is safe and beneficial for everyone.

• Strong existing research track record in AI or another highly technical subject (e.g., CS, math, physics).
• Clear view of which safety research directions are likely to matter most over the next few years.
• Experience leading a team, mentoring graduate students, or supporting early-career researchers.
• Ability to communicate novel methods to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Compensation: $170,000–$270,000/year depending on experience and location, with potential for additional compensation for exceptional candidates. Benefits include work-related travel and equipment expenses, catered lunch and dinner at Berkeley offices. Remote and in-person options available.
