What you will drive

Citizen University is seeking a Facilitation & Learning Manager to support facilitation and experience design of CU trainings and events. Our programs are designed for people we call civic catalysts, local leaders who are committed to strengthening a culture of citizenship in their communities. In this role, you’ll serve as a primary facilitator of our flagship program, Live Like a Citizen , which we lead with partner organizations around the country several times a year. You'll help bring CU content and ideas to life, steward meaningful conversations and dynamic activities, and help civic catalysts – from teens to older adults – discover ways to model and activate powerful, responsible citizenship in the places they call home. In addition to Live Like a Citizen , you’ll also support experiences for our Alumni Network to enrich and sustain their local efforts, and other emergent opportunities. Our programs are playful and spirited, engaging mind, body, and heart to invite catalysts to build the habits and skills that nurture healthy civic life and deepen their civic identities. Our learning experiences lean into ritual, craft, and physicality; we take intellectually dense ideas and turn them into concepts that people can feel, play around with, and understand in completely new ways. This role is ideal for someone who is energized by crafting transformative experiences that feel a bit like magic, values staying curious and open with people of many backgrounds, and leads with spirit, judgment, and humility. Key Responsibilities Facilitation & Program Delivery - 40% Facilitate our signature program, Live Like a Citizen, and other assigned learning experiences alongside CU teammates in communities around the country. Prepare for dynamic in-person and virtual experiences through facilitation planning and coordination with teammates. Create spirited learning environments that foster curiosity, reflection, and meaningful engagement across differences using participatory activities, texts, storytelling, and embodied exercises. Represent Citizen University's ideas, frameworks, and approach to powerful, responsible citizenship with clarity, authenticity, and confidence. Curriculum & Program Design - 30% Prepare facilitation plans and participant resources for trainings and events, tailoring content to different groups and community contexts. Design workshops and community-building experiences for program alumni in partnership with teammates, providing facilitation expertise, instructional design support, and learning materials for Alumni Network programming. Apply emerging practices in facilitation, civic learning, and adult education to strengthen participant development and support intended program outcomes. Collaborate with subject matter experts, internal partners, and program alumni to ensure learning experiences are relevant and dynamically responsive to participant needs. Learning Evaluation & Program Improvement - 20% Lead pre-training briefings and post-training debriefs to evaluate participant learning (shifts in feelings, knowledge, beliefs, and skills) and identify opportunities to strengthen curriculum, facilitation, and engagement. Contribute data, observations, and insights to program evaluation aligned with Citizen University's impact framework. Adapt and improve curricula and future learning experiences in collaboration with the Program Director and other content contributors. Cross-Team Collaboration & Coordination - 10% Coordinate with teammates to align participant preparation needs, curriculum design, logistics, communications, and program delivery plans. Manage timelines, workplans, and facilitation resources for assigned projects. Contribute to program documentation and administrative workflows, including maintaining participant records across shared systems, tracking expenses, reporting, and other coordination with Administration & Finance. Qualifications The strongest candidates for this role bring deep facilitation experience, a thoughtful approach to fostering learning, and a genuine commitment to helping people practice powerful, responsible citizenship. Specifically, we're looking for someone with: Core Experience At least three years of experience in program facilitation, adult and/or teen education, or learning design within a nonprofit, educational institution, or community-based setting. Experience designing and improving curricula, workshops, or group-based learning experiences that are interactive, reflective, and formative. Advanced facilitation experience across virtual and in-person environments. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to represent Citizen University's ideas with clarity and authenticity. Experience translating complex ideas into engaging learning experiences through thoughtful facilitation and instructional design. Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities from planning through execution. Proficiency with Google Workspace, Zoom, Slack, Asana, Salesforce, Canva, and similar collaboration tools. How You Show Up An established personal and/or professional practice of civic engagement that aligns with Citizen University’s mission and values. Natural curiosity about civic life, with a genuine interest in local communities, civic participation, and the habits that shape healthy democratic life. Builds trust across differences, approaching relationships with a commitment to dignity, respect, and belonging, across political, cultural, ideological, geographic, and other differences. Warmth and charisma; an engaging facilitation presence, grounded in emotional intelligence, cultural humility, and the ability to create learning environments where people feel welcomed, constructively challenged, and connected. Exceptional interpersonal communication and active listening skills, easily connecting with participants, partners, and colleagues through thoughtful, responsive communication. Sound judgment and emotional steadiness when navigating ambiguity, disagreement, and complex group dynamics. Collaborative ownership, balancing initiative-taking, accountability, and follow-through with a genuine appreciation for creative partnership and shared problem-solving. Growth mindset, demonstrated through intellectual curiosity, openness to feedback, and a commitment to continually strengthening your own practice and the learning of others.
