Position Type: Full time, exempt, 35 hours per week. Hybrid remote/in person - expectation to be in the office in Charlotte at least two days per week Background: Carolina Migrant Network (CMN) is a 501(c)(3). CMNโ€™s mission is to provide legal services for individuals in removal proceedings. We provide education on the US immigration System and empower immigrant communities to participate in everyday and civic life. We envision a world of empowered, self-determined, organized communities free from fear of family separation. Summary of Position: CMN is hiring a full time immigration attorney. This position reports to lead immigration attorney/co-director of CMN. This role will focus on direct representation to individuals in removal proceedings, with a focus on asylum/withholding of removal/CAT claims and bond proceedings. Primary Responsibilities: Represent individuals in removal proceedings, both detained and not detained Assist lead attorney with existing caseload Legal writing Legal research Meeting with clients and maintaining their files Reviewing intakes and assisting in referring individuals to low bono attorneys, maintaining CMNโ€™s pro bono bond network Requirement to travel for work, including to court in various cities, including the Stewart Detention Center, located in Lumpkin, GA Qualifications and Education Requirements Must hold a Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school Active state bar license to practice law Fluency in Spanish is a requirement Ability to be in Charlotte, NC Driverโ€™s License required to satisfy travel requirements Strong commitment to advocacy, abolition, and understanding that the law is a tool of oppression Strong legal writing and research skills Effective communication skills Ability to advocate for individuals actively being trafficked by the U.S. government Work Environment: CMN has a physical office location located in Charlotte, NC There is an expectation to be in the office at least two days a week and occasionally more Commitment to supporting co workers and understanding that the majority of CMN staff are not attorneys. Our work is informed by the organizers we work with the demands of the community we work with. There is zero tolerance for individuals who blame or shame clients.
