How to apply for Technical Solutions Civil Manager
AECOM
About AECOM
AECOM is a global infrastructure firm that focuses on sustainable legacies through infrastructure and environmental solutions. This role supports AEC clients and AECOM project teams in modernizing data and project workflows, which is central to how AECOM delivers digital products.
About the role
The Technical Solutions Civil Manager is a remote, client-facing role that combines advanced Civil 3D modeling with digital delivery consulting. You will help clients and internal teams adopt integrated lifecycle processes and technology platforms to maximize ROI. This position requires hands-on civil design and data management across roads, drainage, land development, and utilities.
A typical day
A typical day may involve building or reviewing Civil 3D models, preparing earthwork calculations and QTOs, and managing coordinate systems and data transformations. You might join client meetings to consult on digital solutions, then coordinate model and data exchange with internal teams and external consultants. You could also create or update 3D federated models and perform clash detection to ensure LOD and COBie compliance.
Who AECOM is looking for
- Expert in Autodesk Civil 3D with proven experience building surfaces, corridors, and grading models, plus earthwork calculations and QTOs.
- Skilled in managing coordinate systems, data transformations, and building existing-condition surfaces from LiDAR, DEMs, survey data, and breaklines.
- Experienced with 3D federated models using Autodesk and Bentley tools (Civil 3D, Navisworks, InfraWorks, Bentley iTwin, MicroStation/OpenRoads) and clash detection.
- Able to work independently, lead client meetings, and coordinate model/data exchange with internal teams and external consultants.
Tips for this application
- Highlight specific projects where you built Civil 3D surfaces, corridors, and grading models, and mention the software versions and data sources used.
- Quantify your experience with earthwork calculations, QTOs, and existing-condition surfaces from LiDAR, DEMs, survey data, and breaklines.
- List your experience with both Autodesk and Bentley tools, especially Navisworks, InfraWorks, Bentley iTwin, and MicroStation/OpenRoads.
- Emphasize any role you played in developing or enforcing BIM/CAD standards and managing lifecycle data for survey and client datasets.
- Note your ability to work remotely and independently, and give examples of leading client meetings and coordinating with external consultants.
What to cover in your cover letter
['Your hands-on expertise in Autodesk Civil 3D for roads, drainage, land development, utilities, and stabilization/restoration projects.', 'Your experience with data management: coordinate systems, transformations, and building existing-condition surfaces from LiDAR, DEMs, survey data, and breaklines.', 'Your ability to create and manage 3D federated models using Autodesk and Bentley tools, including clash detection and LOD/COBie compliance.', 'Your track record of consulting with clients and project teams to drive adoption of digital solutions and maximize ROI.']
Draft a cover letterResearch before applying
- Review AECOM's digital delivery and sustainable infrastructure projects to understand how they use Civil 3D, Bentley, and federated models.
- Look up AECOM's recent work with AEC clients and any public case studies on lifecycle data management or BIM standards.
- Check AECOM's remote work policies and any state-specific requirements, since the role can work out of any state.
- Research the specific Autodesk and Bentley tools mentioned in the job description to see how AECOM integrates them in practice.
Likely interview topics
Based on the job description, expect questions about:
- How do you build an existing-condition surface from LiDAR, DEMs, survey data, and breaklines, and how do you handle coordinate system transformations?
- Describe a project where you developed Civil 3D models for roads, drainage, or land development, and how you performed earthwork calculations and QTOs.
- How have you created and managed 3D federated models using Civil 3D, Navisworks, InfraWorks, Bentley iTwin, and MicroStation/OpenRoads?
- What is your approach to developing, updating, and enforcing BIM/CAD standards across a project or organization?
- Give an example of how you consulted with a client to adopt digital solutions and modernize their data and project workflows.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not apply without demonstrating hands-on Civil 3D modeling experience for roads, drainage, land development, utilities, or restoration projects.
- Avoid listing only general CAD or BIM experience without mentioning specific tools like Civil 3D, Navisworks, InfraWorks, Bentley iTwin, or MicroStation/OpenRoads.
- Do not ignore the data management aspects: coordinate systems, transformations, LiDAR, DEMs, survey data, and breaklines are core to this role.
