How to Apply for Sr. Embedded Software Engineer, Robotics Platform

at Serve Robotics

๐Ÿข About Serve Robotics

Serve Robotics is a zero-emissions robotics company building autonomous sidewalk delivery robots that operate in cities like Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, and Chicago. Unlike many robotics startups still in R&D, Serve is already doing commercial deliveries, meaning your code directly impacts real-world operations. The team is composed of tech industry veterans in software, hardware, and design who are passionate about solving urban logistics sustainably.

About This Role

As a Sr. Embedded Software Engineer on the Robotics Platform team, you will design and maintain the middleware and application frameworks that power Serve's robot fleet. You'll work with modern C++ on embedded Linux, owning critical platform components from design through deployment and operation. This role is pivotal in scaling the fleet and ensuring reliable, efficient robot behavior in diverse urban environments.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

You might start your day with a stand-up to sync with the robotics platform team on progress and blockers. Then, you could dive into coding a new feature for the middleware, followed by testing it on a robot in the lab or via simulation. Later, you might collaborate with hardware engineers to integrate a new sensor or review deployment plans for the next fleet update. Expect a mix of hands-on coding, debugging, and cross-team coordination.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Serve Robotics Is Looking For

  • Extensive experience in modern C++ (C++14/17) and embedded Linux development, with a focus on robotics middleware (e.g., ROS, ROS2, or custom frameworks).
  • Proven track record of owning complex software components from architecture to production, including testing, validation, and fleet-wide deployment.
  • Familiarity with robotics concepts such as sensor integration, real-time systems, and communication protocols (e.g., DDS, MQTT, CAN).
  • Strong collaborative skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, agile environment, contributing to cross-disciplinary teams.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Serve Robotics

1

Highlight specific projects where you developed or maintained robotics middleware on embedded Linuxโ€”quantify the impact (e.g., reduced latency, improved reliability).

2

Emphasize your experience with modern C++ and any robotics frameworks (ROS, ROS2, etc.) in your resume and cover letter, as this is a core requirement.

3

Showcase your ability to own components end-to-end: from design to deployment and operation. Use concrete examples of components you've shipped and maintained at scale.

4

Demonstrate familiarity with Serve Robotics' mission and technology by mentioning their sidewalk robots or commercial delivery operations in your application.

5

If you have experience with fleet management or over-the-air updates, highlight itโ€”Serve operates a growing fleet and values scalable solutions.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Your hands-on experience with modern C++ and embedded Linux in a robotics context, with specific examples of middleware or framework development.', "How you've owned critical platform components from design to deployment, and the impact of your work on product reliability or performance.", "Your alignment with Serve's mission to revolutionize sustainable urban delivery, and why you're excited to contribute to a fleet that's already in commercial operation.", 'Your ability to collaborate effectively in a diverse, agile team and solve complex problems in dynamic environments.']

๐Ÿ” Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • โ†’ Explore Serve Robotics' website, blog, and press releases to understand their robot's capabilities, delivery operations, and expansion cities.
  • โ†’ Research the technical stack Serve likely uses: ROS/ROS2, embedded Linux, C++, and any open-source contributions they've made.
  • โ†’ Look into the challenges of sidewalk delivery robots: navigation, safety, regulatory hurdles, and how Serve addresses them.
  • โ†’ Check LinkedIn profiles of current Serve Robotics engineers to understand their backgrounds and the team culture.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Deep dive into your experience with C++ on embedded Linux: memory management, concurrency, and real-time constraints.
2 Robotics middleware architecture: how you would design a communication layer for a fleet of robots, considering reliability and scalability.
3 Debugging and testing strategies for embedded systems: how you ensure code quality in resource-constrained environments.
4 Fleet deployment and operation: how you would handle software updates, monitoring, and failure recovery across a distributed robot fleet.
5 Collaboration and cross-functional work: examples of working with hardware, perception, and operations teams to deliver integrated solutions.

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Focusing only on high-level robotics algorithms without demonstrating deep embedded systems and C++ expertise, which is the core of this role.
  • Neglecting to mention specific robotics middleware experience (e.g., ROS) or framing it as a minor skill when it's central to the job.
  • Submitting a generic application that doesn't show awareness of Serve's commercial stage and the need for production-ready, reliable code.
