How to apply for Sr. Content Strategist
PixelSpoke
About PixelSpoke
PixelSpoke is a remote-first agency that partners exclusively with credit unions, helping them build websites that are member-focused and human. The culture prizes curiosity, solution-orientation, and good humor, and the team is small enough that every hire shapes how the company works. This is a place for someone who wants to build something new rather than inherit a well-oiled machine.
About the role
As the Sr. Content Strategist, you'll own content as a discipline at PixelSpoke—not just write copy for credit union websites. You'll define content strategy and UX writing standards, build a freelance bench, and create the processes and quality bar that every client project will follow. This is a build role: much of what makes content work well doesn't exist yet, so you'll be architecting the function while also executing on it.
A typical day
A typical day might involve reviewing a client's site map and drafting UX copy for key pages, then meeting with a designer to align on content hierarchy. You might also spend time interviewing a new freelance writer, updating a content style guide, or giving feedback on a contractor's draft. Because this is a build role, you'll often be creating templates and processes as you go, rather than following an existing playbook.
Who PixelSpoke is looking for
- Has 5+ years of content strategy and UX writing experience, ideally in an agency or client-services setting, with a portfolio that shows website copy and information architecture work.
- Is a systems thinker who can create processes, templates, and standards from scratch—and is energized by ambiguity rather than needing a fully built department.
- Has experience sourcing, briefing, and managing freelance content contractors, and can set and maintain a high quality bar across multiple projects.
- Understands credit unions or similar member-focused financial services, and can translate complex products into clear, human language.
- Communicates with good humor and directness, and is comfortable collaborating remotely with designers, developers, and clients.
Tips for this application
- Write a cover letter that tells a story about a time you built a content function from scratch—PixelSpoke explicitly says they don't accept resumes without one and want to get to know you.
- Reference credit unions or member-focused financial services specifically; show you understand the audience and the regulatory/trust context they operate in.
- Include a link to a portfolio that demonstrates website copy, UX writing, and information architecture work—not just blog posts or social content.
- Mention your experience managing freelance writers or contractors, since building and maintaining a bench is a core part of this role.
- Read the entire job ad carefully and mirror its language about 'build,' 'structure,' and 'standards'—they're signaling they want someone who creates order, not just executes tasks.
What to cover in your cover letter
Emphasize your experience building content strategy and UX writing standards from the ground up, ideally in an agency or client-services environment. Highlight your ability to manage and scale a freelance content bench, including how you source, brief, and quality-check work. Show that you understand credit unions or similar member-focused financial institutions and can write clear, trustworthy copy for them. Finally, demonstrate that you thrive in ambiguity and are excited to create process and structure, not just produce content.
Draft a cover letterResearch before applying
- Look at PixelSpoke's website and portfolio to understand their design and content style, and note which credit unions they've worked with.
- Research the credit union industry—common products, member pain points, and regulatory considerations—so you can speak credibly about the audience.
- Find and read any interviews, blog posts, or LinkedIn updates from PixelSpoke team members to understand their culture and how they talk about their work.
- Review the job ad line by line and note every responsibility; be ready to map your experience to each one, especially the 'build' aspects.
Likely interview topics
Based on the job description, expect questions about:
- How would you approach building a content strategy function from scratch at an agency like PixelSpoke?
- Walk us through a time you created UX writing standards or a content style guide and how you got buy-in.
- How do you source, brief, and manage freelance content contractors while maintaining quality?
- What's your process for developing information architecture for a website, especially for a credit union audience?
- How do you handle feedback from clients and internal teams when content needs to change late in a project?
Common mistakes to avoid
- Submitting a resume without a cover letter—PixelSpoke explicitly states they do not accept resumes without one, so this is an automatic disqualifier.
- Only showing writing samples that are blog posts or social copy; they want to see website copy, UX writing, and information architecture work.
- Talking about content strategy as only execution (writing, editing) without addressing process, standards, and team-building—this role is about building the function.
- Ignoring the credit union context or treating it as interchangeable with any other industry; show you understand the specific audience and trust dynamics.
