How to Apply for Software Engineer, Infrastructure Security

at OpenAI

๐Ÿข About OpenAI

OpenAI is at the forefront of AI research and deployment, developing technologies like GPT and DALLยทE that are reshaping industries. Working here means contributing to some of the most impactful AI systems while navigating complex ethical and security challenges, offering a unique opportunity to shape the future of AI safely.

About This Role

As a Software Engineer on the Infrastructure Security team, you'll design and build the security backbone that protects OpenAI's massive GPU clusters and production environments. Your work will directly enable safe AI research by embedding security into the very infrastructure that powers it, ensuring that performance and protection go hand in hand.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

You might start by reviewing threat models for a new GPU cluster deployment, then partner with an infrastructure engineer to implement a service mesh for fine-grained access control. After lunch, you could write code for a key rotation automation, and later join a design review for a new authentication service, ensuring it meets both security and performance requirements.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to OpenAI

1

Tailor your resume to highlight specific security infrastructure projects you've built, emphasizing scale and impact (e.g., 'Designed a service handling 1M+ requests/sec').

2

In your cover letter, mention OpenAI's mission and connect your work to enabling safe AI, not just generic security.

3

Showcase your experience with Kubernetes and cloud security in detail, using concrete examples of how you've secured clusters or microservices.

4

If you have experience with GPU clusters or high-performance computing, highlight itโ€”this is a unique requirement for this role.

5

Research OpenAI's security challenges (e.g., protecting training data, securing model weights) and subtly reference them in your application to show deep understanding.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

โ€ข Emphasize your passion for OpenAI's mission and your understanding of the unique security risks in AI (e.g., model theft, adversarial attacks). โ€ข Highlight your hands-on experience building security services at scale, with metrics and outcomes. โ€ข Stress your ability to collaborate with research and infrastructure teams, balancing security with performance. โ€ข Mention your excitement about working on cutting-edge problems like line-speed encryption and machine identity in AI workloads.

๐Ÿ” Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • โ†’ Read OpenAI's blog posts on security and safety to understand their current challenges and initiatives.
  • โ†’ Familiarize yourself with their public statements on AI safety and how they approach responsible deployment.
  • โ†’ Research their infrastructure stack, such as their use of Kubernetes and cloud providers, to speak intelligently about their environment.
  • โ†’ Look into recent security incidents in AI labs (e.g., model theft) to anticipate the threats they care about.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 How would you design an authentication system for a multi-tenant Kubernetes cluster used for AI training?
2 Describe a time you had to secure a high-performance system without degrading its speed. What trade-offs did you make?
3 What are the key security risks in a GPU cluster environment, and how would you mitigate them?
4 Explain how you would implement a key management service for a distributed system, and how you'd handle rotation and access control.
5 How do you approach embedding security into infrastructure as code, and what tools or practices do you recommend?
6 Given OpenAI's mission, how would you prioritize security initiatives when resources are limited?
Practice Interview Questions โ†’

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't submit a generic resume that doesn't highlight security infrastructure experienceโ€”this is a specialized role.
  • Avoid focusing only on theoretical security knowledge; they want engineers who can build and ship robust systems.
  • Don't neglect the performance aspectโ€”emphasize that you can secure systems without slowing down AI workloads, as that's a critical balance.
