How to apply for Social Media, Marketing & Communications Lead
Our Planet. Theirs Too.
About Our Planet. Theirs Too.
Our Planet. Theirs Too. is a dedicated animal welfare organization that focuses on advocacy and education to protect animals. Working here means contributing to a mission-driven team that values compassion and impact, with a remote-first culture that allows for flexibility and autonomy.
About the role
As the Social Media, Marketing & Communications Lead, you will spearhead the organization's digital presence, crafting and executing strategies across social media, newsletters, and press materials. You'll also supervise a small team, making this a leadership role where your creativity and strategic thinking directly amplify the voices of animals in need.
A typical day
A typical day might start by reviewing social media metrics and scheduling posts across platforms, then leading a virtual check-in with your team to delegate content creation tasks. You might spend time editing a video or designing a graphic for an upcoming campaign, and later draft a newsletter or press release. Your day would end by analyzing engagement data and planning next week's content strategy.

Tips for this application
- In your resume and cover letter, explicitly highlight your experience working with animal rights or animal welfare organizations, mentioning specific campaigns you led and the results achieved.
- Showcase your knowledge of the animal rights movement's aesthetics by linking to your portfolio or social media profiles that demonstrate your ability to create content aligned with the cause.
- Since the role involves supervising a team, provide examples of how you've mentored or managed content creators, editors, or interns in previous positions.
- Tailor your application to emphasize your ability to work independently as a contractor, including your time management skills and experience working remotely in North American time zones.
- Mention your familiarity with the latest social media algorithms (e.g., Instagram, TikTok, Facebook) and how you've used them to increase engagement for advocacy organizations.
What to cover in your cover letter
1. Emphasize your passion for animal welfare and your understanding of the organization's mission to protect animals through advocacy and education. 2. Highlight your specific achievements in growing social media presence or engagement for animal rights causes, with concrete metrics. 3. Showcase your leadership experience in supervising content teams and your ability to manage multiple projects. 4. Demonstrate your proficiency in video and graphic design tools, and how you've used them to create impactful content for advocacy.
Draft a cover letterResearch before applying
- Visit Our Planet. Theirs Too.'s website and social media channels to understand their current messaging, tone, and content style.
- Research recent campaigns or initiatives they've run to see how they engage their audience and what causes they prioritize.
- Look into their team structure and any public statements from leadership to understand their organizational culture and values.
- Review their press releases or media coverage to see how they position themselves in the animal welfare space.
Likely interview topics
Based on the job description, expect questions about:
- Can you walk us through a successful social media campaign you led for an animal rights organization? What was your strategy and what results did you achieve?
- How do you stay updated on social media algorithm changes, and how would you adapt our strategy to ensure our content remains visible?
- Describe your experience supervising a small team. How do you delegate tasks and ensure content aligns with our brand voice?
- How would you approach creating content that balances advocacy with education, especially for sensitive animal welfare topics?
- As a contractor, how do you manage your time to meet the 20+ hour weekly commitment while coordinating with a remote team?
Common mistakes to avoid
- Avoid submitting a generic application that doesn't reference the specific mission of animal welfare or the organization's name. Tailor your materials to show genuine interest.
- Don't underestimate the requirement for experience in the animal rights field; if you lack it, highlight transferable skills but be honest about your background.
- Avoid neglecting to mention your intermediate design/video skills. If you have these skills, provide examples; if not, consider upskilling before applying to meet the requirements.
