How to apply for Senior Software Engineer II, Fullstack

ICON

About ICON

ICON is a construction technology company revolutionizing homebuilding with 3D-printing robotics, aiming to create sustainable, low-carbon, and affordable housing at scale. Working here means joining a mission-driven team that blends advanced hardware, software, and materials science to solve global housing challenges. Employees are drawn to ICON's ambitious vision, its interdisciplinary culture, and the chance to see their code directly impact physical homes.

About the role

As a Senior Software Engineer II, Fullstack, you will be a technical leader in building BuildAI, ICON's digital construction software platform, from the ground up. You'll design and deploy reusable web components, libraries, and APIs for the BuildOS suite, collaborating with UX designers to shape the Design System. This role is pivotal in scaling ICON's software capabilities, directly enabling efficient and intelligent construction workflows.

A typical day

A typical day might involve leading a stand-up with the BuildAI team, pairing with a UX designer to refine a component in the Design System, and reviewing API designs for a new construction workflow. You'll also spend time mentoring junior engineers, contributing to architectural decisions, and ensuring code quality through testing and deployment. Collaboration with hardware and construction teams may occur to align software with physical building processes.

Who ICON is looking for

  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 5 years as a technical leader across engineering organizations, ideally in fast-paced startup or product-driven environments.
  • Deep expertise in fullstack development, particularly Node.js and TypeScript, with a strong portfolio of building REST APIs and modern web-based frontends.
  • Proven ability to design and implement reusable component libraries and APIs for large-scale applications, with a focus on maintainability and performance.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and elevating technical competencies across teams, with a passion for education and knowledge sharing.

Tips for this application

  • Highlight any experience with construction tech, IoT, or digital twin platforms—even if not directly required, it shows domain alignment with ICON's BuildOS.
  • Quantify your leadership impact: specify team sizes, mentorship outcomes, and how you improved engineering standards across organizations.
  • Showcase projects where you built reusable frontend components or APIs from scratch, emphasizing scalability and cross-team adoption.
  • Mention any exposure to 3D printing, robotics, or sustainable technology in your cover letter or resume to demonstrate genuine interest in ICON's mission.
  • Use ICON's language: refer to 'BuildAI', 'BuildOS', and 'Design System' in your application to show you've researched their specific platforms.

What to cover in your cover letter

Emphasize your experience leading fullstack development from concept to deployment, particularly with Node.js and TypeScript. Highlight your ability to design reusable components and APIs that serve multiple applications. Discuss your mentorship philosophy and how you've grown technical teams. Connect your work to ICON's mission of sustainable construction, explaining why you're excited to apply your skills to 3D-printed homes.

Draft a cover letter

Research before applying

  • Explore ICON's website, especially their projects like the Vulcan printer and recent 3D-printed home communities, to understand their technology and impact.
  • Read about BuildOS and BuildAI if available—look for press releases, blog posts, or interviews with ICON's software team to grasp the platform's goals.
  • Research the construction tech landscape and competitors like Katerra or Mighty Buildings to contextualize ICON's unique approach and challenges.
  • Look up ICON's leadership and engineering team on LinkedIn to understand their backgrounds and potential interviewers.

Likely interview topics

Based on the job description, expect questions about:

  • How would you architect a reusable component library for BuildOS that supports multiple applications and evolves with UX needs?
  • Describe a time you led a technical initiative across an engineering organization—what was your strategy for adoption and mentorship?
  • Walk us through designing a REST API for a construction workflow, considering scalability, security, and integration with hardware.
  • How do you collaborate with UX designers to implement a Design System and ensure consistency across frontend applications?
  • Given ICON's mission, how would you approach building software that needs to be reliable in physical construction environments?
Practise interview questions

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Failing to demonstrate technical leadership at scale—simply listing years of experience without showing org-wide impact or mentorship.
  • Submitting a generic fullstack resume that doesn't highlight Node.js, TypeScript, or API/component design, which are core requirements.
  • Ignoring ICON's mission and treating this as just another software job—they seek candidates passionate about sustainable construction and innovation.
