How to apply for Senior Sales Engineer
Mainspring Energy
About Mainspring Energy
Mainspring Energy builds fuel-flexible linear generators that add local power capacity with low emissions. It began commercial shipments in 2020 and now has hundreds of megawatts in development with Fortune 500 companies, data centers, and utilities. Partners include AEP, NextEra Energy Resources, and Schneider Electric.
About the role
This Senior Sales Engineer owns technical solution architecture, estimating, and system integration strategy during the sales cycle. The role reports to the Senior Sales Engineering Manager and sits in the Sales Engineering team within Project Delivery. You will develop cost-optimized, execution-ready designs and ensure a clean handoff from concept to execution.
A typical day
A typical day may include building a preliminary system design and cost estimate for a customer proposal, meeting with sales and project delivery to review scope, and answering technical questions from a utility or data center client. You might also document integration strategy for a handoff meeting. Exact routines depend on the team, so ask about daily tools and meeting cadence in the interview.
Who Mainspring Energy is looking for
- Has experience developing system architecture, preliminary designs, and cost estimates for power generation or distributed energy projects.
- Can exercise independent technical judgment and defend architectural choices with commercial rigor.
- Understands linear generators, fuel flexibility, or similar on-site power systems, or can learn the product line quickly.
- Works well across sales, project delivery, and external partners to move deals from concept to execution handoff.
Tips for this application
- Name Mainspring's linear generator and fuel-flexible, low-emissions positioning in your first paragraph to show you read the product description.
- Give one concrete example of a project where you built a cost estimate and preliminary design from concept through handoff.
- Mention any experience with Fortune 500 customers, data centers, or utilities, since those are Mainspring's stated customer groups.
- Reference at least one Mainspring partner (AEP, NextEra Energy Resources, Schneider Electric) if you have worked with them or similar firms.
- Connect your work style to one of Mainspring's stated values: Pragmatic Optimism, Excellence without Ego, or Proactive Collaboration.
What to cover in your cover letter
Show how you build cost-optimized, execution-ready system architectures for power projects. Explain how you balance technical design with commercial targets during a sales cycle. Describe your experience handing off projects from concept to execution without gaps. State why Mainspring's linear generator and net-zero grid focus fits your background.
Draft a cover letterResearch before applying
- Read Mainspring's product page on the Linear Generator, including fuel flexibility and emissions specs.
- Look up Mainspring's announced projects or partnerships with AEP, NextEra Energy Resources, and Schneider Electric.
- Find recent news or press releases about Mainspring's commercial shipments since 2020 and its hundreds of megawatts in development.
- Check the backgrounds of the Senior Sales Engineering Manager and Project Delivery team on LinkedIn if profiles are public.
Likely interview topics
Based on the job description, expect questions about:
- Walk through a system architecture you designed from concept through execution handoff, including how you estimated cost.
- How do you handle a sales cycle where the customer wants a design change that raises cost or risk?
- What do you know about Mainspring's linear generator and how it differs from fuel cells or reciprocating engines?
- How would you approach system integration strategy for a data center or utility customer?
- Describe a time you exercised independent technical judgment and had to defend it to sales and delivery teams.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Submitting a generic engineering resume without showing cost estimating or preliminary design work.
- Claiming knowledge of linear generators without any evidence of relevant power generation or on-site energy experience.
- Ignoring the commercial side of the role and only describing technical design skills.
