How to apply for Senior Researcher

Pearl Certification

About Pearl Certification

Pearl Certification is a mission-driven organization that certifies high-performing homes, helping homeowners increase property value while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Working here means directly contributing to the intersection of climate action, real estate, and building science. As a remote-first US company, Pearl offers flexibility and the chance to shape national standards in home performance.

About the role

As Senior Researcher, you will own the development and continuous improvement of Pearl's SCORE, the proprietary home performance rating. Your primary focus will be maintaining and enhancing the Resilience Pillar, while supporting research for other pillars. You'll also represent Pearl externally through publications and engagement with national and international experts, ensuring the SCORE reflects current best practices.

A typical day

Your day might involve analyzing data to refine resilience metrics, collaborating with internal teams on SCORE updates, and corresponding with external experts or standards bodies. You could also spend time drafting a white paper or preparing a presentation for a conference, all while managing your schedule autonomously in a remote setting.

Who Pearl Certification is looking for

  • Deep expertise in building science, particularly in resilience and home performance (e.g., energy efficiency, durability, indoor air quality, disaster resistance).
  • Experience developing or maintaining rating systems, standards, or certifications in the built environment.
  • Strong research background with a track record of publishing or presenting to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and stay current with emerging technologies, codes, and standards.

Tips for this application

  • Highlight any experience you have with home performance rating systems (e.g., HERS, LEED, Passive House, RESNET) and explicitly connect it to Pearl's SCORE.
  • Showcase your understanding of the Resilience Pillar—discuss specific resilience metrics (e.g., wind, flood, wildfire resistance) and how you've incorporated them into research or standards.
  • Demonstrate your ability to translate complex research into practical tools by providing examples of publications, white papers, or standards you've authored.
  • Emphasize remote work success: Pearl is remote-first, so mention your experience with distributed teams and asynchronous collaboration.
  • Tailor your resume and cover letter to Pearl's mission—show passion for decarbonizing homes and enhancing resilience, not just general research skills.

What to cover in your cover letter

["Your specific experience with resilience research and how it aligns with Pearl's SCORE Resilience Pillar.", "Concrete examples of how you've improved or developed a rating system, standard, or certification.", 'Your ability to engage with external experts and promote research through publications or presentations.', 'Your motivation to work at Pearl Certification and contribute to its mission of certifying efficient, resilient homes.']

Draft a cover letter

Research before applying

  • Study Pearl's SCORE framework in detail—understand its pillars, especially the Resilience Pillar, and how it's used in the market.
  • Research Pearl's partners and clients (e.g., real estate agents, builders, utilities) to understand the ecosystem.
  • Look into recent publications or press releases from Pearl to grasp their research priorities and external messaging.
  • Familiarize yourself with key home performance standards (e.g., RESNET, IECC, LEED) and resilience frameworks (e.g., FORTIFIED, IBHS).

Likely interview topics

Based on the job description, expect questions about:

  • How would you approach maintaining and improving the Resilience Pillar of the SCORE? What metrics or data sources would you prioritize?
  • Describe a time you had to update a standard or rating system based on new research or technology. What was your process?
  • How do you stay current with building codes, technologies, and best practices in home performance?
  • Give an example of how you've communicated complex research findings to a non-expert audience.
  • Why are you interested in Pearl Certification specifically, and how do you see this role contributing to the company's mission?

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Being too generic about 'research skills' without linking them to home performance or resilience specifically.
  • Ignoring the remote aspect—failing to demonstrate ability to work independently and communicate effectively in a distributed team.
  • Overlooking Pearl's mission—appearing purely academically interested without showing commitment to climate impact and practical application.
