How to apply for Senior Quality Assurance (QA) Automation Engineer

TeraWatt Infrastructure

About TeraWatt Infrastructure

TeraWatt Infrastructure is building the permanent transportation and logistics infrastructure of tomorrow by developing, financing, owning, and operating large-scale EV charging solutions for autonomous and electric vehicle fleets. Unlike typical charging networks, TeraWatt focuses on turnkey, multi-fleet hubs along key logistics corridors, making it a critical player in the multi-trillion-dollar transition to electrified transport. Working here means directly contributing to reducing carbon emissions while solving complex, real-world infrastructure challenges at scale.

About the role

As a Senior QA Automation Engineer, you'll own the quality strategy for TeraWatt's charging management platform, fleet-facing APIs, and site operations software. You'll design and maintain automated test suites that validate everything from payment processing to real-time charger telemetry, ensuring reliability for fleet customers who depend on uninterrupted charging. Your work will directly impact the uptime and trustworthiness of a network that keeps electric trucks and autonomous vehicles moving.

A typical day

You'll start your day with a stand-up to align with developers and product managers on testing priorities for upcoming releases. Then you might dive into writing automated tests for a new API endpoint that reports charger status, or debug a flaky test in the CI pipeline. Later, you'll review test coverage for a feature that handles payment processing for fleet customers, and collaborate with a developer to reproduce a bug reported from a field site. You'll end by documenting findings and planning tomorrow's test automation tasks.

Who TeraWatt Infrastructure is looking for

  • 5+ years of experience in QA automation, with a strong focus on API and integration testing for distributed systems (e.g., REST, GraphQL, message queues).
  • Proficiency in modern automation frameworks (e.g., Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium) and languages like Python or TypeScript, plus experience with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Jenkins).
  • Familiarity with IoT or energy management domains—experience testing hardware-software interactions, telemetry data, or charging protocols (OCPP) is a major plus.
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, remote-first environment, collaborating with cross-functional teams to embed quality throughout the development lifecycle.

Tips for this application

  • Highlight any experience testing systems that involve hardware-software integration, especially in energy, automotive, or IoT—TeraWatt's product is deeply physical, not just web.
  • Quantify your impact: e.g., 'Reduced regression test time by 60% by implementing parallel test execution' or 'Caught critical payment bugs before production, saving $X in potential downtime.'
  • Mention specific tools and frameworks in your resume (e.g., Playwright, Pytest, Postman, OCPP) and be prepared to discuss trade-offs in your choices.
  • Show familiarity with TeraWatt's mission by referencing their focus on fleet electrification and the unique challenges of charging infrastructure in your cover letter.
  • Since the role is remote in Canada, emphasize your ability to work autonomously and asynchronously, and note any experience with distributed teams.

What to cover in your cover letter

In your cover letter, emphasize: (1) your experience automating tests for complex, distributed systems—ideally involving hardware or real-time data; (2) a specific example of how you improved quality and velocity through automation; (3) your alignment with TeraWatt's mission to decarbonize transport and excitement about solving infrastructure-scale problems; (4) your ability to thrive in a remote, ownership-driven culture where you proactively identify and address quality gaps.

Draft a cover letter

Research before applying

  • Explore TeraWatt's website and press releases to understand their specific projects, such as fleet charging hubs and partnerships with autonomous vehicle companies.
  • Read up on OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) and common challenges in EV charging infrastructure, like load management and payment integration.
  • Research TeraWatt's leadership team and recent funding rounds to understand their growth stage and technical priorities.
  • Look into the company's values—especially 'imperfect action beats perfect inaction'—and think of examples where you've embodied similar principles.

Likely interview topics

Based on the job description, expect questions about:

  • How would you design an automated test suite for a charging station's firmware update process, ensuring minimal downtime and rollback safety?
  • Describe a time you found a critical bug in production. What was your approach to root cause analysis and preventing recurrence?
  • What metrics do you track to measure test effectiveness and overall quality? How do you balance automation coverage with manual exploratory testing?
  • TeraWatt's platform integrates with various hardware and third-party APIs. How would you approach testing for interoperability and data consistency?
  • Tell us about a situation where you had to influence developers or product managers to prioritize quality. How did you handle it?

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Focusing only on web UI testing and ignoring backend, API, or hardware integration experience—TeraWatt's product is not a typical web app.
  • Using generic examples that could apply to any company; tailor your stories to infrastructure, energy, or fleet operations.
  • Neglecting to mention remote work experience or failing to demonstrate self-direction, as TeraWatt is remote-first and values ownership.
