How to apply for Senior Product Designer - Heartbeat AI (m/f/d)

1KOMMA5°

About 1KOMMA5°

1KOMMA5° is building a virtual power plant that connects solar, batteries, heat pumps, and e-mobility into one system, linked to the electricity market in real time. The company aims to transition 1.5 million households to renewable energy by 2030 and has over 3,000 employees across more than 80 locations. This role is part of the Product & Tech team, working on the Heartbeat app, which is the consumer-facing product for this energy system.

About the role

As a senior product designer, you will embed directly into B2C product teams and shape the Heartbeat app. You will work on complex technical energy concepts, prototype quickly, and use AI as a force multiplier in your design workflow. The role is remote and full-time, focused on the flagship consumer product rather than side tasks.

A typical day

You might start with a stand-up with your product team, then spend time prototyping a new feature for the Heartbeat app using AI tools to generate variations. Later, you could run a user test or review designs with engineers to ensure feasibility. The role is remote, so much of the collaboration happens asynchronously.

Who 1KOMMA5° is looking for

  • Has experience designing for complex technical domains, ideally energy, IoT, or similar systems, and can onboard quickly.
  • Is AI-native: already uses AI tools in the design workflow to speed up ideation, prototyping, and iteration.
  • Can prototype fast and test ideas with users, moving from concept to validation efficiently.
  • Has worked on B2C products and understands consumer app design at scale.

Tips for this application

  • Show how you use AI in your design process. Provide concrete examples, such as prompts, tools, or workflows you have built.
  • Highlight any experience with energy, hardware, or technical systems. Explain how you made complex concepts understandable for consumers.
  • Include a link to a portfolio that demonstrates fast prototyping and iteration. Focus on B2C mobile or web apps.
  • Mention your familiarity with remote work and distributed teams. 1KOMMA5° has locations worldwide, so async communication skills matter.
  • Reference the Heartbeat app or the virtual power plant concept in your application to show you understand the product context.

What to cover in your cover letter

['Your experience designing for complex technical products and making them usable for consumers.', 'Specific examples of how you use AI to accelerate design work, from research to prototyping.', 'Your ability to embed in a product team and work on a flagship consumer app, not side projects.', 'Your interest in renewable energy and the mission to transition households to clean energy.']

Draft a cover letter

Research before applying

  • Read about 1KOMMA5°'s virtual power plant and how it connects solar, batteries, heat pumps, and e-mobility to the electricity market.
  • Look up the Heartbeat app and any public information about its features or user experience.
  • Check the company's Product & Tech team page to understand how design fits into the organization.
  • Research the German energy market and renewable energy trends, as the company operates from Finland to Australia.

Likely interview topics

Based on the job description, expect questions about:

  • How you would design a feature for the Heartbeat app that helps users understand real-time energy prices and automate device usage.
  • Your process for prototyping and testing complex energy concepts with users who may not be technical.
  • Examples of how you have used AI in your design workflow, including tools and outcomes.
  • How you collaborate with product managers and engineers in a remote, cross-functional team.
  • Your approach to designing for scalability, given the goal to reach 1.5 million households by 2030.
Practise interview questions

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Submitting a generic portfolio that does not show complex technical or B2C app design work.
  • Claiming to be AI-native without concrete examples of how you use AI in design.
  • Ignoring the energy domain and not showing any interest in renewable energy or the company's mission.

Deadline

No deadline is listed. Roles without a deadline usually close once the employer has enough candidates, so apply soon if you are interested.
