How to Apply for Senior Mechanical Systems Engineer

at Skyven Technologies

๐Ÿข About Skyven Technologies

Skyven Technologies is a mission-driven startup focused on decarbonizing industrial process heat, a major source of global emissions. They combine deep technical expertise with a strong commitment to fighting climate change, offering engineers the chance to work on impactful, real-world solutions. As a remote-first company, they value autonomy and collaboration across disciplines.

About This Role

As Senior Mechanical Systems Engineer, you will lead the design and refinement of industrial thermal-fluid systems, from concept through field deployment. Your work will directly contribute to reducing carbon emissions by developing efficient, cost-effective heat systems. You'll collaborate across mechanical, process, and controls teams, ensuring designs are buildable, operable, and maintainable.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

You might start by reviewing a P&ID with the process team to refine a heat exchanger circuit, then create a SolidWorks model of a new skid layout. After lunch, you could join a call with a vendor to discuss material selection for a pressure vessel, and wrap up by reviewing a drawing package for fabrication. Throughout the day, you'll collaborate with controls and field engineers to ensure the design is practical and cost-effective.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Skyven Technologies Is Looking For

  • Has 8+ years of hands-on experience in industrial thermal-fluid systems, including piping, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and rotating equipment.
  • Is highly proficient in SolidWorks and can create detailed CAD models, assemblies, and drawings while critically reviewing designs for fabrication and field issues.
  • Thrives in a cross-functional environment, working with process, electrical, controls, and field teams to drive designs from concept to deployment.
  • Is passionate about climate tech and eager to apply mechanical engineering fundamentals to decarbonize industrial heat.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Skyven Technologies

1

Tailor your resume to highlight specific experience with thermal-fluid systems, P&IDs, and skidded equipmentโ€”use keywords from the job description.

2

Include a portfolio or examples of CAD work (SolidWorks) and design packages you've reviewed or created, especially for industrial systems.

3

In your cover letter, explicitly connect your past projects to decarbonization or energy efficiency, even if indirectly.

4

Mention any experience with field deployment, vendor engagement, or working across multiple engineering disciplines.

5

Research Skyven's technology (e.g., their heat pump or thermal storage solutions) and reference it in your application to show genuine interest.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Emphasize your experience with industrial thermal-fluid systems and how you've improved buildability, operability, and cost.", 'Highlight your proficiency in SolidWorks and your ability to catch design issues early through critical review.', 'Show your cross-functional collaboration skills, especially working with process, controls, and field teams.', "Express your passion for climate tech and how your skills can directly contribute to Skyven's mission of decarbonizing industrial heat."]

๐Ÿ” Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • โ†’ Read about Skyven's core technology: their industrial heat pump or thermal storage system and how it reduces emissions.
  • โ†’ Understand the industrial decarbonization landscape, especially process heatโ€”key sectors like food, chemicals, or paper.
  • โ†’ Check Skyven's recent news or blog posts for updates on projects, partnerships, or funding.
  • โ†’ Review typical challenges in thermal-fluid system design, such as thermal expansion, pressure drop, or corrosion, and think how you'd address them.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Describe a time you redesigned a thermal-fluid system to improve cost or performance. What trade-offs did you consider?
2 How do you approach P&ID development and ensure accuracy across mechanical, process, and controls disciplines?
3 Walk us through your experience with skidded equipment design and fabrication, including vendor engagement.
4 How do you balance buildability, operability, and maintainability in your designs? Give a specific example.
5 What is your experience with heat exchangers or rotating equipment in an industrial setting? How did you select materials or components?

โš ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't submit a generic resume without highlighting thermal-fluid or industrial equipment experienceโ€”it won't stand out.
  • Avoid focusing only on theoretical knowledge; this role requires practical, hands-on design and field experience.
  • Don't neglect to show cross-functional collaborationโ€”this role works closely with process, electrical, and field teams.
