How to apply for Senior Mechanical Systems Engineer
Skyven Technologies
About Skyven Technologies
Skyven Technologies builds high-temperature heat pumps that produce industrial steam at lower cost than fuel-fired boilers. They offer customers either a CAPEX purchase or an Energy-as-a-Service model with zero upfront cost and savings from day one. The company is a high-growth startup focused on decarbonizing industrial process heat.
About the role
This is an individual contributor role for a senior mechanical engineer who will work directly with the CTO and the technical team. You will turn ambitious product concepts into equipment that can be built, commissioned, operated, and maintained in the field. The job requires strong system-level thinking and deep practical mechanical judgment.
A typical day
You might review a heat pump design with the CTO, then work on a mechanical detail that affects how the unit is assembled or serviced. Later you could join a call with a customer site to discuss commissioning or maintenance. The work mixes conceptual system thinking with practical decisions about real equipment.
Who Skyven Technologies is looking for
- Has spent time close to real hardware in the field and understands the gap between paper designs and working equipment.
- Can complement conceptual system design with practical mechanical engineering decisions that affect buildability, commissioning, operation, and maintenance.
- Is comfortable working in a startup environment: moving quickly, thinking deeply, and collaborating with strong engineers.
- Has experience with industrial process heat, heat pumps, steam systems, or similar mechanical systems (based on the company's focus).
Tips for this application
- Highlight any hands-on field experience with mechanical systems, especially where you had to fix or adjust designs for real-world conditions.
- Explain how you have translated a concept into equipment that was actually built and operated, not just modeled.
- Mention specific examples of working with CTOs or small technical teams in a startup or high-growth setting.
- Connect your experience to industrial process heat, steam, or heat pumps if you have it. If not, explain how your mechanical judgment transfers.
- Avoid generic statements about wanting to fight climate change. Instead, show you understand Skyven's heat pump and EaaS model.
What to cover in your cover letter
Focus on your ability to make practical mechanical decisions that survive field conditions. Describe a time you improved a design for buildability, commissioning, or maintenance. Show you can work directly with a CTO and complement system-level thinking. Explain why you want to work on industrial heat pumps and the EaaS deployment model.
Draft a cover letterResearch before applying
- Study Skyven's high-temperature heat pump and how it produces industrial steam at lower cost than fuel-fired boilers.
- Understand their two deployment models: traditional CAPEX purchase and Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) with zero CAPEX.
- Look into the industrial process heat market and the emissions and cost challenges Skyven addresses.
- Find out who the CTO is and any public talks or interviews about the technology and engineering approach.
Likely interview topics
Based on the job description, expect questions about:
- Describe a time you had to change a design because it did not work in the field. What did you learn?
- How do you balance system-level conceptual thinking with practical mechanical details?
- What experience do you have with heat pumps, steam systems, or industrial process heat?
- How would you approach commissioning and maintaining a high-temperature heat pump in a customer facility?
- Tell us about a time you worked with a CTO or small technical team to turn a concept into working equipment.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Only talking about design and analysis without showing any field or hands-on hardware experience.
- Ignoring the startup context and describing only large-company processes or slow-moving engineering cycles.
- Making generic climate statements without connecting to Skyven's specific heat pump and EaaS model.
