How to apply for Senior Managing Communications Associate
Carbon180
About Carbon180
Carbon180 is a climate-focused NGO that works at the intersection of science, business, and policy to transform carbon from a liability into an asset. The team is based in Washington, D.C., with remote teammates across the US. This role offers a chance to shape public understanding of carbon removal at a critical time.
About the role
As the senior managing communications associate, you will build and run the content engine for Carbon180. You will turn technical knowledge from policy, science, and program teams into blogs, newsletters, social posts, web copy, and short-form video. You will lead the first sustained public education push on carbon removal and own several digital channels end to end.
A typical day
A typical day might involve drafting a blog post from an interview with a policy expert, scheduling social media posts, and reviewing analytics from last week's newsletter. You might also meet with the fundraising team to shape a story about a program, or edit a short video for a public education campaign. The role is remote, so much of the work happens over video calls and shared documents.
Who Carbon180 is looking for
- Has 4+ years of experience in communications, content creation, or digital media, with a portfolio showing blogs, newsletters, social campaigns, and short-form video.
- Can translate complex scientific or policy information into clear, engaging content for general audiences.
- Is comfortable managing multiple digital channels (website, social, email) and using analytics to improve performance.
- Works well with technical teams and can support fundraising storytelling without oversimplifying the science.
Tips for this application
- In your application, mention specific carbon removal solutions or policies you follow, such as direct air capture or enhanced weathering, to show you understand the subject matter.
- Provide links to 2-3 examples of your content work (blog posts, social threads, videos) that demonstrate your ability to explain complex topics simply.
- Address your experience with remote work and cross-team collaboration, since the team is distributed and you will work with policy, science, and fundraising staff.
- Reference Carbon180's mission to turn carbon from a liability to an asset in your own words, and explain why that framing matters to you.
- If you have not worked in climate before, describe how you have quickly learned a technical field and turned it into accessible content.
What to cover in your cover letter
Explain how you would build a content engine for a carbon removal NGO, including which channels you would prioritize and why. Describe your process for turning technical input from scientists and policy experts into content for non-expert audiences. Give an example of a public education campaign you executed and what you learned from the results. Show that you understand Carbon180's approach of working across science, business, and policy.
Draft a cover letterResearch before applying
- Read Carbon180's recent blog posts, newsletters, and social media to understand their current tone, topics, and frequency.
- Learn the basics of carbon removal methods they mention, such as direct air capture, soil carbon, and mineralization, so you can speak about them in interviews.
- Look up their policy priorities and any recent reports or white papers to see how they frame carbon as an asset.
- Check the backgrounds of the policy, science, and communications team members on LinkedIn to understand who you would collaborate with.
Likely interview topics
Based on the job description, expect questions about:
- How would you explain carbon removal to someone with no background in climate or energy?
- Walk us through a time you turned a complex policy or science document into a blog post or social thread.
- Which digital channels would you focus on first for Carbon180's public education push, and how would you measure success?
- How would you work with our policy and science teams to ensure accuracy while keeping content engaging?
- Describe a situation where you had to manage multiple content projects with competing deadlines.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Submitting a generic cover letter that does not mention carbon removal or Carbon180's specific approach.
- Focusing only on graphic design or video editing without showing writing and editing skills, since the role is content-heavy.
- Claiming to be passionate about climate without demonstrating any knowledge of carbon removal or the policy landscape.
- Ignoring the remote nature of the role and not addressing how you stay organized and communicative in a distributed team.
