How to apply for Senior Manager, Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A)

Spark MicroGrants

About Spark MicroGrants

Spark MicroGrants is a pioneering nonprofit that has empowered over 1,000 villages across 6 countries in sub-Saharan Africa through its community-driven development model. By combining facilitated community meetings with small grants, Spark catalyzes local action and institution building, scaling impact through partnerships with NGOs and governments. Working here means contributing to a world where everyone lives with dignity and determines their own future.

About the role

As the Senior Manager, FP&A, you will be the critical link between Spark's visionary funding partnerships and the financial realities that sustain them. You will build detailed financial models, craft donor-friendly budgets and reports, and translate outcomes into compelling financial narratives. Reporting directly to the CFO, you will collaborate with senior leadership and the fundraising team to ensure financial sustainability and strategic decision-making.

A typical day

A typical day might involve collaborating with the fundraising team to develop a budget for a new partnership, refining a financial model to forecast multi-year program costs, and preparing a financial report for a major donor. You could also meet with the CFO to discuss cash flow projections and then join a call with country teams to align on budget assumptions. The work is dynamic, balancing strategic analysis with hands-on financial production.

Who Spark MicroGrants is looking for

  • Extensive experience in financial analysis, budgeting, and forecasting, with a proven track record of building complex models from scratch.
  • Strong proficiency in financial systems and tools (e.g., Excel, ERP systems, BI tools) and the ability to estimate high-level information while diving into granular details.
  • Exceptional communication skills to translate financial data into clear narratives for donors, board members, and senior leadership.
  • Experience in the nonprofit sector or international development, with an understanding of donor reporting requirements and restricted funding.

Tips for this application

  • Highlight your experience in building financial models that support fundraising or donor relationships, specifically mentioning any work with restricted funds or grant budgets.
  • Demonstrate your ability to work remotely and collaborate across time zones, as this role is remote and involves working with teams in sub-Saharan Africa and the US.
  • Showcase your proficiency with financial systems and tools by listing specific software (e.g., Excel, NetSuite, Salesforce) and describing how you've used them to improve financial reporting.
  • Tailor your resume to emphasize FP&A in a nonprofit context, using terms like 'donor deliverables,' 'financial narratives,' and 'outcome-based budgeting.'
  • In your cover letter, explicitly connect your work to Spark's mission and values, showing that you understand the unique financial challenges of a scaling nonprofit.

What to cover in your cover letter

Your cover letter should emphasize: (1) your hands-on experience in creating donor-ready financial reports and budgets, (2) your ability to bridge high-level strategy with detailed financial analysis, (3) your familiarity with the nonprofit funding landscape, including restricted grants and multi-year funding, and (4) your passion for Spark's community-driven development model and how your financial skills can support its growth.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Focusing solely on for-profit FP&A experience without connecting it to the nonprofit context or demonstrating an understanding of donor-funded budgets.
  • Using generic language about 'making a difference' without specifically referencing Spark's model and how the FP&A role directly supports it.
  • Neglecting to mention remote work experience or the ability to collaborate effectively across different time zones and cultures.
