How to Apply for Senior Application Engineer

at SMA America

🏢 About SMA America

SMA America is a leader in solar inverter technology and energy management solutions, part of the global SMA Group that has been driving renewable energy innovation for over 40 years. Working here means contributing to a mission of empowering energy independence and sustainability, with a strong focus on quality and customer support. The company offers a remote-first culture with a collaborative international team environment.

About This Role

As a Senior Application Engineer, you will be the technical bridge between SMA's US sales team and their German headquarters, providing expert support to customers and partners on complex solar projects. You'll help design systems, resolve technical issues, and create training materials, directly impacting the successful deployment of SMA products across North America.

💡 A Day in the Life

You might start your day checking emails and voicemails from overnight, then handle a few technical support calls from installers troubleshooting inverter errors. Later, you could review a customer's system design for a large commercial project, ensuring it meets utility requirements, and then join a video call with the German R&D team to discuss a product update. You may also spend time updating a training presentation for an upcoming webinar.

🎯 Who SMA America Is Looking For

  • An electrical engineer with 5-7+ years in renewable energy, specifically with hands-on experience in power electronics like inverters and transformers.
  • A strong communicator who can translate technical concepts for diverse audiences, from installers to utility engineers, and present training sessions effectively.
  • A problem-solver who enjoys troubleshooting over the phone and email, and can manage multiple customer projects simultaneously.
  • Someone who is comfortable working independently in a remote role, but also thrives as a liaison between teams in different time zones.

📝 Tips for Applying to SMA America

1

Highlight specific experience with SMA products (e.g., Sunny Boy, Sunny Tripower) or similar inverters in your resume and cover letter.

2

Quantify your impact in previous roles, e.g., 'Reduced customer escalation time by 20% through improved documentation' or 'Supported 50+ utility interconnection projects'.

3

Tailor your application to show your ability to work across cultures, especially if you have experience collaborating with German teams or international partners.

4

Include examples of technical training you have developed or delivered, such as webinars, manuals, or in-person workshops.

5

Since the job is remote, emphasize your self-management skills and home office setup that ensures reliability (e.g., high-speed internet, quiet workspace).

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

["Your deep understanding of power electronics and how SMA's technology fits into the broader solar ecosystem.", 'Your experience in customer-facing technical support, especially handling complex inquiries and utility interconnection requirements.', 'Your ability to create clear, effective training materials that help customers and internal teams succeed.', "Your enthusiasm for SMA's mission of enabling energy independence and your alignment with their sustainability goals."]

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Describe a time you resolved a challenging technical issue for a customer involving an inverter or power electronics.
2 How would you approach a situation where a customer's system design doesn't meet utility interconnection requirements?

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't submit a generic resume without tailoring it to highlight power electronics and renewable energy experience.
  • Avoid ignoring the requirement for training skills; if you lack formal training experience, emphasize informal mentoring or documentation you've created.
  • Don't underestimate the importance of remote work discipline; failing to mention your home office setup or time management strategies can hurt your application.
