How to apply for Product Designer
Fuse Energy
About Fuse Energy
Fuse Energy is a fully integrated energy company building solar, batteries, hardware, grid infrastructure, and real-time power trading. It has raised over $200M from investors including Balderton, Lakestar, Accel, and Creandum, plus angels like Nico Rosberg. Design leads product here, not PMs, and the design team includes people from Pentagram, Revolut, and Arrival.
About the role
This is an early design hire. You will help define the entire product roadmap and work directly with the CEO (ex-Revolut) and across engineering, trading, and operations. You will design consumer mobile and web apps that reward users for controlling usage, balancing grid demand, and upgrading homes with solar, batteries, and EVs, plus physical and digital experiences for home energy upgrades and hardware.
A typical day
You might start by reviewing user data and grid demand signals with engineering and trading, then sketch flows for a feature that rewards lower home energy usage. Later you could meet with the CEO on roadmap priorities and with operations on a home energy upgrade or hardware touchpoint. The exact daily routine is not stated, so ask about team rituals, tools, and how design reviews work.
Who Fuse Energy is looking for
- You have shipped consumer mobile and web products end to end, ideally in a startup or small design team.
- You are comfortable working without a PM and can define product direction from first principles.
- You have experience or clear interest in physical-digital products such as hardware, home installations, or energy devices.
- You can collaborate directly with a CEO, engineers, traders, and operations staff, and you are based in the UK or able to work remotely within UK hours.
Tips for this application
- Show consumer product work in your portfolio. Include mobile and web apps you designed, not just concepts or design systems.
- If you have any hardware or physical product experience, include it. Fuse designs its own hardware and home energy upgrades.
- Mention specific Fuse products or features you would improve, based on their public app or website.
- Explain how you work without a PM. Fuse says design leads product, so give an example of setting direction yourself.
- Reference the $200M raise and named investors only if it connects to why you want to work on energy. Do not list them as prestige.
What to cover in your cover letter
Why you want to design for energy transition and consumer energy products. How you have led product direction without a PM. Your experience with mobile and web consumer apps. Any hardware or physical-digital product work you have done.
Draft a cover letterResearch before applying
- Download and use the Fuse Energy app. Note specific screens, flows, and gaps you would fix.
- Read about Fuse's integrated model: solar, batteries, hardware, grid infrastructure, real-time trading, and home installation.
- Look up the design team's background at Pentagram, Revolut, and Arrival to understand their design standards.
- Find public interviews or posts from the CEO (ex-Revolut) about product and design at Fuse.
Likely interview topics
Based on the job description, expect questions about:
- How you would redesign Fuse's consumer app to reward users for controlling usage and balancing grid demand.
- A time you defined a product roadmap without a PM and how you got engineering and operations buy-in.
- How you approach designing for both digital interfaces and physical home energy hardware.
- How you would work with a CEO who is ex-Revolut and a design team from Pentagram, Revolut, and Arrival.
- Your process for first-principles thinking and how it changes your design decisions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Submitting a portfolio with only visual design or design systems and no shipped consumer products.
- Ignoring the hardware and physical experience parts of the role and focusing only on app UI.
- Writing a generic cover letter that does not mention Fuse's products, energy model, or no-PM design structure.
Deadline
No deadline is listed. Roles without a deadline usually close once the employer has enough candidates, so apply soon if you are interested.
