📝 Tips for Applying to OpenAI

1

Highlight specific examples of planet-scale security systems you have architected and operated, quantifying the scale (e.g., number of users, requests per second, geographic distribution).

2

Emphasize your experience with cross-functional leadership, especially in collaborating with research or infrastructure teams to roll out security changes with minimal friction.

3

Showcase your familiarity with OpenAI's mission and its security challenges, possibly by discussing how you would apply your skills to protect frontier AI systems.

4

Tailor your resume to include keywords like 'authN/Z', 'policy enforcement', 'key management', 'Kubernetes', and 'cloud platforms' to pass automated screening.

5

If you have experience with AI/ML security or using AI for automation/detection, make it prominent, as it is a unique aspect of this role.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

- Explain your motivation for wanting to work at OpenAI, specifically referencing its mission and the critical role of security in advancing AI safely. - Detail your most significant achievement in infrastructure security, emphasizing the scale and impact, and how it aligns with OpenAI's needs. - Describe your approach to balancing security with developer ergonomics and reliability, and how you have successfully navigated such trade-offs in the past. - Mention your experience with modern security primitives (e.g., identity, attestation, encryption key lifecycle) and how you can contribute to building platform building blocks.

🔍 Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • Read OpenAI's security and safety research publications to understand their approach to alignment and secure AI deployment.
  • Review blog posts or talks from OpenAI engineers about their infrastructure and security challenges, such as their use of Kubernetes and cloud providers.
  • Understand OpenAI's organizational structure and mission, and how the InfraSec team fits into the broader goals.
  • Stay updated on recent AI security incidents or debates in the industry to speak knowledgeably about current challenges.

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Design a planet-scale key management system with high availability and low latency, considering rotation, revocation, and compliance.
2 How would you approach securing a Kubernetes-based ML training infrastructure with thousands of nodes and continuous job execution?
3 Describe a time you led a cross-functional initiative to roll out a security change across a large organization. What were the challenges and how did you overcome them?
4 How would you leverage AI/ML models to automate threat detection in a cloud environment? Provide a concrete example.
5 Discuss a security incident you handled and what you learned from it, focusing on how you improved the system afterward.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't focus solely on your security experience without demonstrating an understanding of OpenAI's unique AI-focused environment and the balance between research agility and security.
  • Avoid generic responses about 'teamwork' and 'leadership' without concrete examples of leading technical initiatives with measurable outcomes.
  • Don't ignore the 'Principal' level aspect: be prepared to discuss strategic vision and how you would shape the security roadmap, not just execute tasks.
