Job description
Terms of Reference (TOR) for Nile Basin Photography Exhibitions and Everyday Nile Coordination 2026–2027
Project Title: Strengthening Media Capacities and Networks in the Nile Basin
Duty Station: Home-based, with travel to Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and other locations within the Nile Basin
Level of Effort: To be proposed by the bidder (please indicate expert days per component in the financial offer)
Contract Period: November 2026 – July 2027
Background:
Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) is a German non-profit organisation that implements media development projects in crisis regions. Activities focus on the interplay between conflict, media coverage and reconciliation. MiCT’s services comprise the training of journalists and media producers, programme and content development, radio and film production, magazine and book publishing, as well as media research and monitoring in conflict regions.
"Strengthening Media Capacities and Networks in the Nile Basin" aims to amplify balanced and constructive narratives around water resource management and cooperation in the Nile Basin region. The project is a collaboration between Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT), the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI), and other partners.
The project's overall objective is to strengthen media capacities and networks in the Nile Basin to support constructive and solution-oriented approaches to water-related conflicts in the Nile Basin.
The specific objectives of the project are:
- To reach a broad audience of Nile Basin citizens with in-depth, fact-based and constructive reporting on Nile Basin issues.
- To strengthen and expand the existing network of multimedia Nile Basin journalists and media organisations, widening ownership over the network to include more stakeholders and journalists in the region.
- To generate incentives for journalists and media houses to engage in more fact-based and constructive reporting on Nile Basin issues.
Photography plays a pivotal role in storytelling and reporting, enhancing the quality and impact of journalistic work. Under the Everyday Nile project, photographers from across the Nile Basin document how people live with, depend on and relate to the Nile. For 2026–2027, MiCT is looking for a company or organisation to deliver a portable mini exhibition in Dar es Salaam, coordinate the 2026–2027 cycle of Everyday Nile, and produce a regional exhibition of the resulting work.
Key Responsibilities:
- Portable Mini Exhibition, Dar es Salaam (25–27 November 2026)
- Curate and prepare a portable mini exhibition of Everyday Nile photography, in collaboration with the Project Coordinator and partners.
- Handle production of the exhibition, including printing, mounting, transport, set-up and dismantling.
- Coordinate the exhibition on site in Dar es Salaam from 25 to 27 November 2026.
- Everyday Nile 2026–2027: Call for Submissions
- Draft the call for submissions in agreement with MiCT and partners, and disseminate it through relevant networks across the Nile Basin.
- Manage incoming applications and shortlist candidates.
- Support the selection of 10 photographers from 10 Nile Basin countries, together with MiCT and partners.
- Everyday Nile 2026–2027: Webinar Series
- Design and deliver a webinar series of at least two webinars for the selected photographers.
- Provide facilitators and/or guest speakers, and handle hosting, moderation and documentation of each webinar.
- Everyday Nile 2026–2027: Coaching and Mentoring
- Provide ongoing coaching and mentoring to the 10 selected photographers throughout the project cycle, from story development through to final edit.
- Track each photographer’s progress and flag any issues to the Project Coordinator.
- Everyday Nile 2026–2027: Editorial Workshop at Nile Day (22 February 2027)
- Plan and deliver one editorial workshop for the selected photographers on the sidelines of the Nile Day celebrations on 22 February 2027. The location will be confirmed and will be within the Nile Basin.
- Provide facilitators, develop the workshop programme and manage the workshop on site.
- Participation costs for the workshop (participant travel, accommodation and related costs) will be borne by MiCT. The contractor is responsible for coordination, facilitation and programme management.
- Regional Exhibition
- Curate and produce a regional exhibition of the Everyday Nile 2026–2027 work, to be launched at a future event. Date and location to be confirmed.
- Following the launch, ensure the exhibition remains on display for one month in one of the Nile Basin countries, including installation, maintenance and dismantling.
- Programme Management and Reporting
- Provide overall programme management for all of the above components, including a work plan and timeline at the start of the contract.
- Liaise regularly with the Project Coordinator on implementation of activities.
- Submit short progress reports after each main activity and a final narrative report at the end of the contract period.
Requirements:
- Open to companies and organisations; bidders do not need to be based in the Nile Basin.
- Previous experience in conducting photography training, workshops and mentoring programmes.
- Proven experience in curating and producing photography exhibitions, including travelling or portable exhibitions.
- Experience in coordinating regional, multi-country programmes, including online formats such as webinars.
- Experience in working with photographers and photojournalists across the Nile Basin.
- Proposed team of at least one project manager and at least two trainers from two different Nile Basin countries.
- Fluency in English. Working knowledge of Arabic and/or French is an asset.
