How to apply for Mechanical Design Engineer - Fuel Manufacturing

Oklo

About Oklo

Oklo is developing next-generation fast fission reactors and fuel recycling technology. The company aims to provide clean, reliable, and affordable energy by deploying advanced reactor designs and recycling nuclear waste. Working here means contributing to first-of-a-kind fuel manufacturing infrastructure for advanced nuclear reactors.

About the role

As a mechanical design engineer on Oklo's fuel fabrication team, you will design manufacturing equipment and mechanical systems for fuel fabrication facilities. You will take designs from concept through CAD modeling, analysis coordination, documentation, and fabrication readiness. You will also work with vendors to produce designs and help assemble them at facility sites.

A typical day

A typical day might involve CAD modeling of a component for a fuel fabrication system, meeting with other engineering teams to define requirements, and reviewing vendor quotes or fabrication drawings. You might also coordinate with an analyst on a stress or thermal calculation, update design documentation, or plan a site visit to support assembly. The mix depends on the project phase, but expect frequent cross-functional communication and hands-on design work.

Who Oklo is looking for

  • Has experience designing mechanical components and equipment for manufacturing or industrial facilities, preferably in regulated environments like nuclear, aerospace, or energy
  • Is proficient with CAD tools and can translate functional requirements into robust designs that meet operating and space constraints
  • Can coordinate analysis (stress, thermal, structural) and work with vendors through fabrication and assembly
  • Works well cross-functionally with other engineering teams to define requirements and ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry standards

Tips for this application

  • Highlight specific CAD software you have used (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo, NX) and give examples of equipment or mechanical systems you designed for manufacturing or industrial facilities.
  • Describe any experience working with vendors to fabricate and assemble your designs, including how you handled design-for-manufacturability issues.
  • Mention any exposure to regulated industries (nuclear, aerospace, oil and gas, pharma) and how you ensured designs met safety or industry standards.
  • Tailor your resume to show the full design lifecycle: concept generation, requirements definition, CAD modeling, analysis coordination, documentation, and fabrication readiness.
  • In your application, note your willingness to travel to fuel fabrication facility sites for assembly support, since the role mentions assisting with assembly at sites.

What to cover in your cover letter

Explain why you want to work on fuel fabrication for advanced reactors at Oklo specifically, not just any mechanical design role. Describe a design project where you took a component from concept to fabrication, including how you coordinated analysis and worked with vendors. Show you understand the constraints of designing equipment for a regulated nuclear facility. State your experience with cross-functional collaboration and how you handle design reviews and requirements changes.

Draft a cover letter

Research before applying

  • Read Oklo's website and any public materials on their fast fission reactor design and fuel recycling process, especially the fuel fabrication step.
  • Look up the regulatory environment for nuclear fuel fabrication in the US (NRC requirements, safety standards) to understand design constraints.
  • Research Oklo's recent news, partnerships, and deployment timelines to understand where the fuel fabrication team fits in the company's goals.
  • Find out what CAD and analysis tools Oklo engineers typically use by checking job postings or LinkedIn profiles of current employees.

Likely interview topics

Based on the job description, expect questions about:

  • Walk through a mechanical design project from concept to fabrication. What CAD tools did you use and how did you ensure the design met requirements?
  • How have you worked with vendors to manufacture and assemble your designs? What issues came up and how did you resolve them?
  • Describe a time you had to design equipment within tight space or operating constraints. How did you approach the problem?
  • How do you coordinate analysis (stress, thermal, etc.) into your design process? Give an example.
  • What do you know about Oklo's reactor technology and fuel fabrication process? Why does this role interest you?
Practise interview questions

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Submitting a generic mechanical design resume that does not mention manufacturing equipment, industrial systems, or regulated environments.
  • Failing to show any experience with the full design lifecycle, especially fabrication and vendor coordination, since the role explicitly includes those responsibilities.
  • Ignoring the nuclear and regulatory context in your application, which suggests you have not read the job description or understood the industry.

Deadline

No deadline is listed. Roles without a deadline usually close once the employer has enough candidates, so apply soon if you are interested.
