How to apply for Manager of Utility & Energy
CleanSpark
About CleanSpark
CleanSpark is a leading Bitcoin miner that differentiates itself by owning and operating its infrastructure with a focus on clean, affordable, and abundant energy. The company is vertically integrated, from power procurement to mining operations, which means energy strategy is at the core of its business. Working here offers the chance to shape the intersection of energy markets and digital asset production at scale.
About the role
As Manager of Utility & Energy, you will own CleanSpark's utility relationships and energy pathway, directly impacting site selection, power procurement, and operational cost. You'll lead large-load interconnection processes, negotiate electric service agreements, and perform tariff analysis to support both existing mines and new site development. This role is pivotal in ensuring CleanSpark's mining operations have reliable, cost-effective power in a fast-paced, competitive industry.
A typical day
A typical day might involve coordinating with utilities on interconnection study progress, analyzing tariff structures to optimize power costs for a new site, and negotiating terms of an ESA with legal support. You'll also collaborate with the Land & Power team to assess utility capacity for potential acquisitions and update internal stakeholders on project milestones.
Who CleanSpark is looking for
- 5+ years of experience in utility interconnection, energy procurement, or rate analysis, preferably in large-load or industrial settings.
- Deep knowledge of utility tariffs, ESA negotiation, and interconnection procedures across investor-owned utilities, co-ops, and munis.
- Strong analytical skills to model power costs and rate structures, with proficiency in Excel and energy modeling tools.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment, with excellent communication and negotiation skills.
Tips for this application
- Highlight specific experience with large-load interconnection processes, including study phases, agreements, and milestone tracking, as this is a core responsibility.
- Quantify your impact in past roles: e.g., 'Negotiated ESAs saving $X million annually' or 'Managed 500MW+ of interconnection applications.'
- Demonstrate familiarity with Bitcoin mining or data center energy needs, as CleanSpark operates in a niche where power reliability and cost are critical.
- Show your ability to work remotely and coordinate across time zones, as this is a remote role with cross-functional teams.
- Tailor your resume to emphasize utility relationship management and tariff analysis, using keywords from the job description like 'ESA,' 'interconnection,' and 'rate modeling.'
What to cover in your cover letter
In your cover letter, emphasize: 1) Your hands-on experience leading large-load interconnection projects from application to energization, 2) Your ability to negotiate complex ESAs and manage utility relationships across different types of utilities, 3) Your analytical approach to tariff and rate analysis, ideally with examples of modeling power costs for industrial sites, and 4) Your interest in CleanSpark's mission to innovate Bitcoin mining with clean energy, showing you understand the unique energy challenges in this industry.
Draft a cover letterResearch before applying
- Study CleanSpark's existing mining sites and their energy sources to understand their approach to clean energy and utility partnerships.
- Research recent utility interconnection trends and large-load tariffs in states where CleanSpark operates, such as Georgia, Texas, and New York.
- Understand Bitcoin mining's energy intensity and how miners interact with grid operators and utilities, including demand response programs.
- Look into CleanSpark's recent acquisitions and expansions to identify target markets and potential utility challenges.
Likely interview topics
Based on the job description, expect questions about:
- Walk us through a complex interconnection project you managed. What were the key challenges and how did you overcome them?
- How do you approach negotiating an ESA with an investor-owned utility versus a cooperative? What strategies do you use?
- Describe a time you performed a tariff analysis to optimize power costs. What tools and methods did you use?
- How would you assess utility capacity and queue positions for a new Bitcoin mining site? What factors are most critical?
- CleanSpark focuses on clean energy. How would you balance cost, reliability, and sustainability in power procurement?
Common mistakes to avoid
- Avoid generic cover letters that don't mention specific utility or energy experience relevant to Bitcoin mining or large-load interconnections.
- Don't neglect to quantify achievements in energy procurement or rate analysis; vague descriptions won't stand out.
- Avoid showing a lack of understanding of the Bitcoin mining industry or CleanSpark's business model, as energy strategy is central to their operations.
