How to Apply for Lead Product Manager

at EnergyHub

About EnergyHub

EnergyHub is a leading provider of distributed energy resource management systems (DERMS), empowering utilities and their customers to build a clean, resilient, and sustainable energy future. The company's platform connects utilities with smart thermostats, solar inverters, EV chargers, and other DERs to optimize grid operations and unlock new value. Working at EnergyHub means being at the forefront of the energy transition, solving complex technical problems that have a direct impact on decarbonization.

About This Role

As the Lead Product Manager for Utility Integrations, you will own the strategy and execution of how EnergyHub's platform connects with critical utility operational systems such as CIS, ADMS, and Grid DERMS. You will lead a cross-functional team to transform fragmented utility data models and processes into a coherent integration strategy, enabling seamless data exchange and automation. This role is pivotal in building trust with utility clients and unlocking the full potential of DERs for grid reliability and customer engagement.

A Day in the Life

A typical day might involve leading a stand-up with engineering to unblock an API integration, meeting with a utility client's IT team to discuss security requirements, and collaborating with sales to scope a new integration opportunity. You'll also spend time analyzing data models and reviewing technical documentation to ensure seamless connectivity between EnergyHub and utility systems. Throughout, you'll balance strategic thinking with hands-on problem-solving to drive the integration roadmap forward.

Who EnergyHub Is Looking For

  • 7+ years of product management experience, with a focus on enterprise software integrations, preferably in the energy or utility sector.
  • Deep understanding of utility operational systems (CIS, ADMS, DERMS) and their data models, security requirements, and integration challenges.
  • Proven track record of leading complex, technical integrations from concept to launch, working closely with engineering, sales, and client success teams.
  • Strong technical acumen and ability to communicate effectively with utility IT and operations teams, as well as internal stakeholders.
  • Experience with API design, system architecture, and data mapping between disparate systems; familiarity with industry standards like OpenADR, IEEE 2030.5, or CIM is a plus.

Tips for Applying to EnergyHub

  1. 1

Highlight your experience with utility systems (CIS, ADMS, DERMS) in your resume and cover letter—be specific about which systems and how you integrated them.

  2. 2

Demonstrate your ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage stakeholder relationships, especially in a remote setting.

  3. 3

Showcase any experience with distributed energy resources (DERs) or grid modernization projects, as this is core to EnergyHub's mission.

  4. 4

Emphasize your technical skills in API design, data modeling, and system integration; use concrete examples of integrations you've led.

  5. 5

Tailor your application to reflect EnergyHub's values: clean energy, innovation, and collaboration. Mention why you're passionate about the energy transition.

What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Your specific experience integrating with utility operational systems (CIS, ADMS, DERMS) and the impact it had on grid operations or customer programs.', "How you've successfully navigated the complexity of utility data models, security postures, and review processes to deliver seamless integrations.", 'Your ability to lead cross-functional teams and build trust with both internal stakeholders and external utility clients.', "Your passion for clean energy and how you align with EnergyHub's mission to empower a sustainable future."]

Research Before Applying

To stand out, make sure you've researched:

  • EnergyHub's product suite and how their DERMS platform integrates with utilities; look for case studies or white papers.
  • Common utility operational systems (CIS, ADMS, DERMS) and their functions, as well as industry standards like OpenADR and IEEE 2030.5.
  • Recent news and regulatory developments in the distributed energy space, such as FERC Order 2222 and state-level DER programs.
  • EnergyHub's company culture and values, including their remote work practices and commitment to sustainability.

Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

  1. 1 How would you approach integrating EnergyHub's DERMS platform with a utility's CIS and ADMS systems? Walk us through your strategy.
  2. 2 Describe a time you had to align multiple stakeholders with conflicting priorities on a technical integration project. How did you drive consensus?
  3. 3 What are the key challenges in connecting DERs to utility operational systems, and how would you address them?
  4. 4 How do you prioritize features and integrations when dealing with legacy utility systems and varying levels of technical readiness?
  5. 5 Tell us about a time you had to quickly learn a new domain (e.g., utility operations) to effectively lead a product. How did you do it?

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Being too generic about 'utility experience' without demonstrating deep knowledge of specific systems like CIS or ADMS.
  • Focusing only on product management fundamentals without addressing the technical integration challenges unique to this role.
  • Neglecting to show how you've built and maintained relationships with utility clients or internal technical teams in a remote environment.
