How to apply for Lead Field Service Technician III – Solar

New Energy Equity (NEE)

About New Energy Equity (NEE)

New Energy Equity finances and develops solar projects and has installed over 330MW since 2013. Its Energy Support Services group keeps solar and energy storage systems safe, reliable, and producing power. The company is hiring for field service work tied to real operating sites, not office roles.

About the role

This is a lead field service technician III - solar role based in the Las Cruces, New Mexico area. You will be the technical authority in the field, leading complex inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on solar sites. You will also mentor other technicians and help shape how work gets done, with a defined pathway to Technician IV.

A typical day

You drive from your home to solar sites in and around Las Cruces, typically 30 to 90 minutes away. On site you lead inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs, and you mentor other technicians. Most weeks run Monday through Friday, 7am-3pm or 8am-4pm, with a rotational Saturday morning on-call shift.

Who New Energy Equity (NEE) is looking for

  • Holds a master electrician license and can exercise strong electrical judgment in the field.
  • Lives in or is actively relocating to the Las Cruces region before the start date, since the role is field-based and not remote.
  • Has experience leading or mentoring technicians, or is ready to take on that responsibility.
  • Is willing to work outdoors on solar sites, drive from home to job sites, and handle occasional overnight travel under 10%.

Tips for this application

  • State clearly in your resume or application that you live in the Las Cruces area or are relocating there before your start date. Applications from candidates outside the area cannot be considered.
  • Lead with your master electrician license. The posting says no prior solar experience is required and that photovoltaics will be taught, so the license and electrical judgment are the main qualifications.
  • Address the work arrangement directly. This is on-site and field-based, not remote or work-from-home, even if you see it listed as field-based.
  • Mention any experience leading crews, mentoring apprentices, or owning complex electrical troubleshooting. The role is a lead technician III with a path to IV.
  • Confirm your availability for the schedule: M-F, 7am-3pm or 8am-4pm, rotational Saturday on-call 8am-12pm, and overtime over 40 hours at 1.5x.

What to cover in your cover letter

Your master electrician license and how you apply electrical judgment in the field. Your location in or relocation to the Las Cruces region. Any experience leading, mentoring, or taking ownership of complex electrical work. Your willingness to work outdoors on solar sites and follow the field-based schedule, including rotational Saturday on-call.

Draft a cover letter

Research before applying

  • Review New Energy Equity's solar project portfolio and its 330MW installed since 2013 to understand the scale of sites you may service.
  • Look into Energy Support Services and what it does for solar and energy storage systems, since that group runs this role.
  • Check what solar projects exist in and around Las Cruces, New Mexico, to get a sense of the territory you would cover.
  • Find out what a Technician IV pathway looks like at New Energy Equity, or prepare to ask about it in the interview.

Likely interview topics

Based on the job description, expect questions about:

  • How you approach complex electrical troubleshooting when you are the technical authority on site.
  • Examples of leading or mentoring other technicians, since this role includes mentoring technicians coming up behind you.
  • Your understanding of the field-based work arrangement: driving from home to solar sites around Las Cruces, outdoors, with under 10% overnight travel.
  • How you handle a rotational Saturday on-call shift and overtime over 40 hours.
  • Your interest in learning photovoltaics if you have no prior solar experience, and how you would build that knowledge on the job.
Practise interview questions

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying while living outside the Las Cruces region without a clear relocation plan. The posting says those applications cannot be considered.
  • Treating this as a remote or work-from-home job. It is field-based and performed in person outdoors on solar sites.
  • Assuming solar experience is required and leaving out your master electrician license. The posting says master electricians need no prior solar experience and will be trained.

Deadline

No deadline is listed. Roles without a deadline usually close once the employer has enough candidates, so apply soon if you are interested.
