Job description
About Atticus
At any given time, 16 million Americans are experiencing a crisis that requires urgent help from our legal system or government. The right assistance could transform their lives. But today, most never get it.
Atticus makes it easy for any sick or injured person in crisis to get the life-changing aid they deserve. In the last six years, we've become the leading platform connecting people with disabilities to government benefits. We’re also quickly scaling an injury practice to help victims of accidents, misconduct, and violence get compensation from insurance.
So far, we've helped hundreds of thousands of people access over $10B in life-changing aid — and earned over 20,000+ five-star reviews. And we're just getting started.
We've raised more than $100 million from top VC firms like Forerunner, GV (Google Ventures), and True Ventures, with ambitions to create a category defining business assisting Americans in need.
The Job
Most lawyers who dream of building their own practice have to bet their savings to do it, and spend their nights worrying about marketing, payroll, and whether the next good case will come in.
Joining our team gives you the chance to be an entrepreneur without taking that risk. You'll join an established and experienced group of peers whose core job is to help your practice grow, leverage an inflow of injured people who already trust us, and have plentiful capital to invest in representing and working up cases.
Your primary responsibility on a day-to-day basis: representing clients in need, from intake through resolution. You'll select which cases we take on, set case strategy, and make the necessary calls to maximize their recovery.
And as we scale this practice, you'll work closely with our company leaders to determine what kind of firm this becomes. From hiring the team to designing our brand, you’ll have a seat at the table where we make our most important decisions.
This is a fundamentally different approach to practicing law. While some aspects of this job will look like work at a traditional law firm, you’ll also be building alongside software engineers and operators whose full-time job is to grow your practice. You'll also have the resources and the runway to meaningfully invest in the firm (including significant continuing education and training, for you and your team).
You'll report to and partner with our General Manager, Peter Bailinson, and together you’ll work closely with our CEO and Managing Attorney, Sam Byker.
The ideal candidate is excited to be part of something bigger than a single firm: joining a company that has already helped hundreds of thousands of people get the help they need, and is now bringing that same mission to injury victims.
Qualifications
Required:
-
You have deep personal injury experience at a plaintiff's firm, ideally across motor vehicle accidents and premises liability, and exposure to taking cases to trial.
-
You understand how to work up an injury case from intake through resolution, having done so 100+ times before.
-
You know how to deliver five-star client service and have a close-to-spotless track record of leaving clients satisfied.
-
You have a demonstrated commitment to doing good and helping people.
-
And finally, you’re based in California and are licensed to practice law here.
Bonus / Nice-to-Have (required for upper bounds of pay scale):
-
You know the nuts and bolts of legal operations at a plaintiff’s firm, including where the standard playbook falls short. You have specific views on how you'd do it better starting from a blank page.
-
You've supervised non-attorney professionals across intake, case management, and support.
-
You have a network of injury attorneys you can call on for referrals, co-counsel relationships, and general advice.
-
You’ve thought deeply about starting your own legal practice, or have experience at a startup or other fast-paced, agile environment.
We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you're from a background that's underrepresented in tech, we'd love to meet you.
Salary and Benefits
We anticipate the base salary band for this role will be between $170,000 and $300,000 in addition to equity and benefits, with significant additional earning opportunity through bonus or profit sharing tied to performance. The salary at offer will be determined by a number of factors such as candidate's experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity among our team.
Location
This role is based in California — you'll be licensed here and building our first injury practice in this market. Day to day, we're remote and committed to empowering everyone with flexibility, with travel to LA (on the company dime) to be with colleagues, plus offsites. We care a lot about building a great culture and we think some interactions need to happen in person, so we put a lot of thought into retreats, offsites, and other ways to gather.
