What you will drive

ABOUT US Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) coordinates large-scale pro bono programs and issue advocacy efforts to ensure that all levels of government (national, state, and local) protect human rights and provide equal justice under the law. We believe not only in the establishment and enforcement of equality under the law, but in the creation of social and economic conditions that lead to true equity. We currently run programs in the following areas: immigration, climate change, racial justice, voting rights, government accountability, and responding to emergent legal needs. L4GG is a fully remote, mission-driven organization of approximately 55 employees distributed across 19 states. We are in a period of growth and expect to expand our team significantly over the next few years. Our team is deeply committed to our work and we are intentional about building a culture of care, connection, and sustainability across the distance of a virtual workplace. ABOUT THE POSITION STATUS: Full-Time LOCATION: Remote; location flexible. The IT Director is a newly created role at L4GG and will play a critical role in our ability to scale in the coming years. As our first dedicated IT professional, this person will build the organization's IT department from the ground up; establishing the technology, infrastructure, security, and governance framework that will support our continued growth. As a fully remote organization operating across 19+ states and managing sensitive legal, donor, and advocacy data, we operate in a high-stakes legal and political environment that requires thoughtful security, well-defined controls, and reliable technology infrastructure. This role exists to build and maintain those systems. The role is approximately a 60/40 split between infrastructure build-out and ongoing operational management. Initial priorities include implementing Apple Business Manager, strengthening security and VPN management, deploying password management, documenting systems and vendor relationships, and establishing foundational IT processes. As those foundations mature, the role will increasingly focus on governance, AI, staff enablement, and long-term technology strategy. The IT Director will partner closely with the VP of Operations, General Counsel, and HR Manager while serving as both the organization's strategic technology leader and first-line technical support resource. Although we anticipate expanding the IT team as L4GG continues to grow, this position will initially operate as a department of one. The right person for this role enjoys moving between strategic planning and hands-on problem solving, recognizing that both are essential to building a strong IT function. This role is designed for someone who enjoys building systems from the ground up. Success will be measured by sound judgment, thoughtful prioritization, establishing strong foundations, and creating the processes and strategic roadmap that will support the organization's future IT department, not by attempting to tackle every initiative simultaneously. RESPONSIBILITIES: Infrastructure Design & Department Build-Out Assess L4GG's technology environment (systems, vendors, devices, contracts, licenses, and data flows) and develop a multi-year roadmap for scalable infrastructure, policies, documentation, and operational processes. Establish and manage the organization's device lifecycle, including Apple Business Manager, provisioning, inventory, deployment, replacement planning, and secure offboarding. Select, implement, and manage security tools appropriate for a distributed workforce handling sensitive legal and advocacy data. Develop and maintain IT documentation, policies, and standard operating procedures that support a fully remote organization. Cybersecurity & Risk Management Design, implement, and continuously improve L4GG's cybersecurity program, including endpoint protection, identity and access management, MFA, vulnerability management, backups, and monitoring emerging threats. Conduct security assessments and implement improvements that strengthen organizational resilience. Develop, maintain, and test incident response, disaster recovery, and business continuity plans. Establish data governance policies for the secure management of legal, donor, financial, and personnel information. Partner with General Counsel and leadership to ensure compliance with applicable legal, regulatory, grant, and contractual security requirements. Systems Administration & Technology Operations Administer and optimize L4GG's core technology ecosystem, including Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, Airtable, Asana, Clio, CRM platforms, and future enterprise applications. Evaluate, implement, and govern new technologies, balancing usability, accessibility, security, privacy, cost, and organizational impact. Manage identity and access processes, including onboarding, offboarding, role-based access, periodic reviews, and timely deprovisioning. Provide responsive technical support while building scalable support processes and self-service knowledge resources. Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance & Innovation Partner with organizational leadership to identify opportunities to responsibly leverage AI to improve organizational effectiveness and expand capacity. Establish governance for the evaluation, adoption, and responsible use of AI tools, including acceptable use policies, vendor assessments, and data privacy standards. Evaluate, pilot, and implement AI-enabled tools and automation that improve productivity while protecting confidential information and maintaining legal and ethical obligations. Develop training and guidance that helps staff use AI effectively, responsibly, and securely. Staff Enablement & Technology Leadership Design and deliver onboarding, training, and educational resources that promote effective technology use and strong cybersecurity practices. Build technology systems and support processes that enable staff to work effectively and independently while ensuring expert assistance is readily available when needed. Foster a culture in which technology and security enable the organization's mission while respecting employee privacy and avoiding unnecessary surveillance. Provide strategic technology recommendations on infrastructure, emerging technologies, AI governance, and long-term organizational planning. REQUIREMENTS: Required Qualifications 7-12 years of progressive IT experience, including demonstrated ability to design, build, and manage technology infrastructure with limited team support. Proven experience helping small to mid-size organizations (particularly non-profits or mission-driven institutions) build IT programs from an early stage; this person should know the questions to ask when no one else does. Deep, hands-on expertise with Apple ecosystems, include Apple Business Manager, macOS device management, and MDM administration in a fully remote environment. Experience administering Google Workspace at an organizational level, including security configuration, access management, and integrations. Substantive cybersecurity experience, including threat assessment, incident response planning, endpoint security, and working knowledge of frameworks appropriate for social justice organizations. Experience managing a distributed remote workforceโ€™s technology needs, including device logistics, remote support, and the particular challenges of a geographically dispersed team. Ability to quickly learn, administer, and optimize SaaS platforms, including enterprise systems such as CRM, legal case management, collaboration, and productivity platforms. Experience supporting Salesforce administration or implementation is strongly preferred. Strong project management skills with the ability to build and execute on a multi-phase infrastructure roadmap while simultaneously managing day-to-day operational demands. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences with clarity and patience. Commitment to privacy, staff trust, and ethical technology governance, recognizing that effective security does not require unnecessary employee surveillance. Self-directed and resourceful, with sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to work independently while recognizing when collaboration or escalation is appropriate. Genuine curiosity about emerging technology (particularly AI tools) and a thoughtful, critical approach to evaluating and adopting them. Reliable home workspace with high-speed internet and the ability to occasionally receive and ship equipment. Genuine commitment to L4GGโ€™s mission and values and an understanding of the infrastructure you build is in direct service of the fight for equal rights, equal justice, and equal opportunity. Desired Qualifications Experience in the non-profit, legal, or social justice sectors with an understanding of the particular risks and resource constraints these environments present. Relevant certifications such as CompTIA Security+, CISSP, Apple Certified Support Professional, Google Workspace Administrator, or equivalent. Familiarity with compliance requirements affecting nonprofits, including data privacy, grant obligations, and legal confidentiality standards. Experience with legal case management systems (e.g. Clio). Experience designing or implementing AI governance policies in an organizational setting.
