How to apply for Hydrogeology Specialist

AECOM

About AECOM

AECOM is a global infrastructure and environmental firm. The Water Environment team serves public and private clients across the UK, Ireland, and the EMEA region. The groundwater team works with surface water, aquatic ecology, and hydromorphology colleagues on large-scale planning infrastructure projects.

About the role

This is a remote, desk-based hydrogeology role delivering water resources and engineering hydrogeology projects across the UK, Ireland, and internationally. You will provide expert advice on hydrogeological conceptualisation, impact assessment, and dewatering, and author hydrogeological inputs to Environmental Impact Assessments and ESIAs. You will also support junior staff and help develop data management innovations for groundwater modellers.

A typical day

A typical day may involve reviewing hydrogeological data, drafting inputs for an Environmental Impact Assessment, and coordinating with groundwater modellers and surface water colleagues. You might also mentor a junior staff member and work on a data management innovation to improve project delivery.

Who AECOM is looking for

  • Has experience in hydrogeological conceptualisation, impact assessment, and dewatering for water resources and engineering projects.
  • Has authored hydrogeological inputs to Environmental Impact Assessments or ESIAs.
  • Can support and mentor junior staff producing hydrogeological inputs.
  • Is comfortable working remotely and collaborating with groundwater modellers and other disciplines across UK, Ireland, and international projects.

Tips for this application

  • Highlight specific examples where you authored hydrogeological sections of Environmental Impact Assessments or ESIAs.
  • Describe your experience with dewatering and hydrogeological conceptualisation on infrastructure or water resources projects.
  • Show how you have supported junior staff or led hydrogeological inputs on multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Mention any experience with data management or innovation that supports groundwater modellers.
  • Tailor your application to AECOM's Water Environment team structure, noting collaboration with surface water, aquatic ecology, and hydromorphology colleagues.

What to cover in your cover letter

['Your direct experience authoring hydrogeological inputs to Environmental Impact Assessments and ESIAs.', 'Your technical expertise in hydrogeological conceptualisation, impact assessment, and dewatering.', 'Your ability to support junior staff and work remotely across UK, Ireland, and international projects.', 'Any experience developing data management innovations or supporting groundwater modellers.']

Draft a cover letter

Research before applying

  • AECOM's Water Environment team structure and the groundwater team's role within it.
  • Examples of large-scale planning infrastructure projects AECOM has delivered in the UK, Ireland, or EMEA.
  • AECOM's approach to environmental impact assessment and ESIA processes.
  • AECOM's groundwater modelling capabilities and any public data management tools they use.

Likely interview topics

Based on the job description, expect questions about:

  • How you approach hydrogeological conceptualisation for a large-scale infrastructure project.
  • Your experience authoring hydrogeological inputs for Environmental Impact Assessments or ESIAs.
  • How you handle dewatering assessments and impact mitigation.
  • How you support and review the work of junior hydrogeologists.
  • How you would develop data management innovations to support groundwater modellers.
Practise interview questions

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Submitting a generic hydrogeology CV without referencing Environmental Impact Assessment or ESIA experience.
  • Failing to mention remote, desk-based delivery or cross-border UK, Ireland, and international project work.
  • Ignoring the requirement to support junior staff or collaborate with groundwater modellers.
