MiCT is seeking a migration and human rights legal expert who can provide legal advice on relocation opportunities for at-risk journalists from crisis and conflict regions. MiCT invites interested and qualified applicants to submit proposals by 23.59pm CET on 02.09.2026.

Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) is a non-profit organisation working in the area of media development and protection. Across three continents and 15 countries, MiCT supports the protection of journalists and media producers, facilitates programme and content development, and conducts media research and monitoring, in addition to supporting the financial viability of our partners.

2. The Program

The Human Rights & Migration legal expert is to support the MiCT Critical Voices Fellowship for Critical Voices which is aimed at media professionals from conflict and crisis regions who share a common value in their professional journalistic integrity. The program is focused on at-risk journalists and media makers from across the globe.

3. Description of the role

To support Fellows who are having to move into exile for security reasons, MiCT is looking for a human rights and migration legal expert to provide guidance and legal advice on visa and work permit processes and requirements for media makers. The service should cover the following aspects:

  • Conducting thorough assessments and advice to individual Fellows on their personal situation
  • Assist in preparing and submitting visa applications (Work, humanitarian and others), ensuring all necessary documentation is accurate and complete
  • Provide advice for the MiCT team on visa application processes globally
  • Prepare Fellows for visa interviews

Contracts will run from September 2026 until June 2027 on a freelance, ad-hoc, needs basis. No minimum number of hours can be assured.

4.1 Application Requirements

Successful applicants should be able to provide proof of the following:

  • Specialist knowledge of migration and human rights law globally
  • Extensive experience in developing case files and collecting the necessary information in a sensitive manner
  • Familiarity with the specific challenges faced by media makers in the visa and work permit processes is a benefit
  • Experience in sensitive handling of personal information
  • Flexibility to work across time zones, with translators and through various means of communication
  • Excellent communication and advocacy skills, with strong links to existing global, migration support structures
  • Fluency in English is required, working knowledge of other languages spoken in crisis and conflict regions is an asset

4.2 Evaluation Criteria (Award Criteria)

Applications meeting all eligibility criteria under 4.1 will be evaluated and ranked on the basis of the best price-quality ratio, using the following weighted criteria:

Daily rate (price) - 30%

Working knowledge of the regional contexts named above, other working languages, are an advantage and are reflected within the relevant weighted criteria rather than as separate pass/fail requirements. MiCT reserves the right to invite shortlisted applicants to a short interview before final selection.

Offers must remain valid and binding for 60 days from the submission deadline above.

MiCT will evaluate applications against the eligibility and evaluation criteria set out in Section 4. MiCT reserves the right to request clarifications or additional documents from applicants, to invite shortlisted candidates to interview, and to cancel or not proceed with this call at any stage, without liability or compensation for any costs incurred by applicants.
