Bay Islands International School (BIIS) — Roatán, Honduras Part-Time | Remote | Contract/Consulting Position About Bay Islands International School Bay Islands International School (BIIS) is an independent, nonprofit PreK–12 school located on the island of Roatán, Honduras. Founded in 2014, BIIS provides an English-language, internationally oriented education designed to prepare students for success in higher education and an increasingly interconnected world. BIIS is now undertaking an ambitious capital campaign to develop a new school campus that will provide the facilities needed to serve a growing student population and significantly expand the educational opportunities available to children and families in the Bay Islands. We are seeking an experienced Grant Development & Capital Campaign Consultant to help us identify, cultivate, and secure philanthropic funding for this major capital project. The Opportunity This is not simply a grant-writing position. We are looking for an experienced fundraising professional who can help us determine where the best funding opportunities are, how BIIS should approach them, and how to develop compelling proposals that result in significant commitments . The successful consultant will help build a diversified funding pipeline that may include private foundations, family foundations, corporate philanthropy, international organizations, education-focused funders, environmental and sustainability funders, major donors, and other philanthropic sources. The primary objective is to help BIIS secure substantial funding for the development of its new school facility. Key Responsibilities Funding Research and Prospect Development Identify foundations, philanthropic organizations, corporations, family foundations, major donors, and other potential sources of capital funding. Research funders whose priorities align with education, children and youth, international development, sustainability, environmental stewardship, community development, and Latin America. Determine eligibility, funding priorities, typical grant sizes, application requirements, deadlines, and funding history. Develop and maintain a prioritized prospect pipeline. Recommend which opportunities BIIS should pursue and which should be avoided. Grant Strategy and Proposal Development Develop funding strategies for individual prospects. Prepare letters of inquiry, concept papers, grant applications, proposals, budgets, and supporting materials. Adapt BIIS’s case for support to the interests and priorities of individual funders. Work with BIIS leadership to develop compelling project descriptions, objectives, outcomes, budgets, timelines, and impact measures. Coordinate the preparation of supporting documentation required by prospective funders. Maintain a calendar of proposals, deadlines, follow-ups, and reporting requirements. Capital Campaign Support Help BIIS develop a professional funding strategy for its new campus. Identify potential lead donors and major philanthropic prospects. Help establish appropriate funding levels and naming opportunities where appropriate. Assist in developing presentations and other materials for major donor cultivation. Help BIIS establish a systematic approach to moving prospects from initial identification through cultivation, proposal, commitment, and stewardship. Relationship Development Where appropriate, assist BIIS leadership in initiating relationships with prospective funders. Identify opportunities for introductions through professional and philanthropic networks. Help prepare BIIS representatives for meetings and presentations with prospective donors. Advise leadership on appropriate follow-up and cultivation strategies. Qualifications The ideal candidate will have: At least 5 years of demonstrated experience in institutional fundraising, grant development, philanthropy, or nonprofit resource development. A demonstrated record of successfully securing grants or philanthropic commitments. Experience with capital campaigns, capital projects, or grants of significant size is highly desirable. Excellent research, analytical, writing, editing, and communication skills. Experience researching and approaching private foundations and institutional donors. Ability to evaluate funding opportunities strategically rather than simply submitting applications. Strong understanding of nonprofit fundraising principles and donor cultivation. Ability to work independently and manage multiple funding opportunities simultaneously. Excellent organizational skills and attention to deadlines. Strong written English. Particularly Valuable Experience Preference will be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following: International education Latin America or Central America International development Capital campaigns School or educational facilities Children and youth programs Environmental sustainability Private and family foundations Corporate philanthropy Major donor development U.S. nonprofit fundraising Spanish-language ability is desirable but not required. What We Are Looking For We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate results. When applying, please describe: Significant grants or philanthropic gifts you have helped secure. We are much more interested in demonstrated results than in credentials alone. Working Arrangement This is initially a part-time consulting position that can be performed remotely. The consultant will work closely with the BIIS Head of School and other members of the school’s fundraising team. Occasional virtual meetings will be required, with the possibility of travel to Roatán for candidates interested in visiting the school and understanding the project firsthand. The initial engagement is expected to be 6–12 months, with the possibility of continuing the relationship based on results and the needs of the capital campaign. Compensation will be negotiated based on the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and proposed level of engagement.
