How to Apply for Fractional Senior People Advisor

at Educate!

🏢 About Educate!

Educate! is a nonprofit social enterprise that equips young people in East Africa with entrepreneurship and life skills through in-school and livelihood programs, reaching tens of thousands of youth annually. What sets Educate! apart is its evidence-based model, rigorous impact evaluation, and deep partnership with governments in Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania. Working here means directly shaping how a fast-growing, multi-country organization builds its people systems to scale impact.

About This Role

As Fractional Senior People Advisor, you will be the CEO and executive team’s independent, trusted counsel on org design, succession planning, and high-stakes people decisions across four African countries. You will translate complex employment law and global HR policy into practical, legally sound options, coach leaders through interpersonal dynamics, and facilitate sessions that unblock organizational challenges. This part-time, remote role is pivotal in shaping internal communications during restructures, policy changes, and leadership transitions—directly influencing Educate!’s ability to retain talent and deliver on its mission.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might involve a morning call with the CEO to discuss a sensitive leadership transition, followed by drafting a legally compliant restructuring memo for the Kenya team. In the afternoon, you might facilitate a virtual session with two country directors to resolve a cross-border team conflict, then review employment law updates for Rwanda and adjust internal policy guidance accordingly.

🎯 Who Educate! Is Looking For

  • 8+ years in senior HR, people advisory, or organizational development roles, ideally within multi-country African contexts or international nonprofits.
  • Deep working knowledge of employment law and HR compliance in Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania—able to give pragmatic, jurisdiction-specific advice.
  • Proven experience coaching C-suite executives and facilitating high-stakes conversations, with exceptional writing skills for internal communications and policy translation.
  • Comfortable operating as a fractional, independent advisor: self-directed, discreet, and able to balance strategic counsel with hands-on execution in a part-time capacity.

📝 Tips for Applying to Educate!

1

Highlight specific examples of advising executives on org design or succession planning in at least two of the four countries (Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania).

2

Demonstrate your ability to translate employment law into practical options by including a brief case study or bullet in your resume/cover letter.

3

Show familiarity with Educate!’s model and mission—reference their in-school entrepreneurship programs or government partnerships in your application.

4

Emphasize your writing skills by attaching a short, anonymized sample of a people-related communication (e.g., restructuring memo, policy brief).

5

Address the fractional nature directly: explain how you manage part-time advisory work, your availability, and how you stay responsive across time zones.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

In your cover letter, focus on: (1) your experience as an independent people advisor to executive teams, especially in multi-country African settings; (2) concrete examples of translating employment law into actionable HR options across Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania; (3) your coaching and facilitation approach to unblocking organizational challenges; and (4) your ability to craft clear, empathetic internal communications during restructures or leadership transitions. Tie each point back to Educate!’s mission and scale.
