How to Apply for Founder's Associate/Chief of Staff
at Learning Alliance
🏢 About Learning Alliance
Learning Alliance is a fast-scaling education nonprofit that partners directly with schools and Ministries of Education in Sub-Saharan Africa to implement evidence-based structured pedagogy programs. Unlike many NGOs, they are deeply committed to rigorous cost-effectiveness modeling and innovation—including AI-powered tools—to transform foundational literacy in Uganda. Working here means joining a lean, high-impact team where your work directly shapes how governments deliver education at scale.
About This Role
As Founder's Associate/Chief of Staff, you will be the founder's right hand, driving 3–5 concurrent special projects annually across strategy, operations, program design, and fundraising. You'll build cost-effectiveness models, prototype AI tools, develop funder pitches, design A/B tests for program improvements, and represent the organization at conferences. This is a high-leverage role for someone who wants to combine analytical rigor, entrepreneurial execution, and social impact in a remote, full-time capacity.
💡 A Day in the Life
A typical day might start with a check-in with the founder to align on priorities, followed by deep work on a cost-effectiveness model or drafting a funder pitch. You might then jump on a call with the Uganda team to discuss an A/B test for a new SMS literacy tool, and later use AI to generate a first draft of a newsletter. The day could end with reviewing applications for a new program or preparing a slide deck for an upcoming conference.
🚀 Application Tools
🎯 Who Learning Alliance Is Looking For
- 2–7 years of experience in strategy consulting, development economics, social entrepreneurship, or startup operations, with a proven track record of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Advanced Excel skills and fluency with AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, or similar) for research, content creation, and prototyping—you can build a cost-effectiveness model and then use AI to draft a funder pitch.
- Experience in fundraising or business development, including researching funding opportunities, building relationships, and creating tailored pitches for donors or investors.
- Comfort with ambiguity and a bias toward action: you can design an A/B test for an SMS-based literacy tool, analyze the results, and iterate quickly, all while managing governance setup for a new program.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce polished external materials (pitch decks, newsletters, website content) and represent the organization at conferences.
📝 Tips for Applying to Learning Alliance
Highlight specific examples of driving multiple projects concurrently—quantify the number and outcomes (e.g., 'Led 4 simultaneous initiatives: cost model, funder pitch, AI prototype, and governance framework').
Showcase your AI fluency by mentioning specific tools you've used and how you applied them to real work (e.g., 'Used ChatGPT to draft a funding proposal that secured $50K').
Demonstrate your understanding of structured pedagogy or foundational literacy—reference evidence-based programs like Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) or similar in your materials.
If you have experience in Sub-Saharan Africa or with Ministries of Education, emphasize it; otherwise, explain why you're excited to work in Uganda and how you'll ramp up quickly.
Include a link to a portfolio or work sample that shows your ability to create polished external materials, such as a pitch deck or a data model (redact sensitive info).
✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter
Focus on your ability to drive special projects end-to-end: pick one or two examples that mirror the role's needs (e.g., cost-effectiveness modeling, AI tool prototyping, funder pitches). Emphasize your AI fluency and how you've used it to enhance productivity or innovation. Show a deep interest in Learning Alliance's mission and specific approach—mention structured pedagogy and the Ugandan context. Finally, highlight your comfort with remote work and cross-functional collaboration, as you'll be working closely with the founder and a distributed team.
Generate Cover Letter →🔍 Research Before Applying
To stand out, make sure you've researched:
- → Study Learning Alliance's website and any published reports to understand their specific structured pedagogy model and results in Uganda.
- → Research the landscape of foundational literacy in Sub-Saharan Africa, including key players (e.g., Teaching at the Right Level, Pratham, government programs) and evidence on what works.
- → Look into the founder's background and any interviews or talks they've given to understand their vision and working style.
- → Explore potential funders in the education space (e.g., USAID, DFID, Gates Foundation, local foundations) and their priorities to anticipate fundraising strategies.
💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics
Based on this role, you may be asked about:
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Being vague about your AI experience—simply saying 'I'm familiar with AI' is not enough; you need to show concrete examples of how you've used it to drive results.
- Focusing only on strategy and ignoring execution—this role requires both high-level thinking and hands-on project management, so avoid sounding like you only want to strategize.
- Neglecting to mention remote work experience or cross-cultural collaboration—since the team is remote and works in Uganda, show that you can thrive in a distributed, multicultural environment.
