How to apply for Finance & Compliance Director

Red Wine & Blue

About Red Wine & Blue

Red Wine & Blue is a national community of over 600,000 diverse suburban women working to defeat extremism through grassroots organizing and relational outreach. Unlike traditional political organizations, RWB operates as a multi-entity nonprofit ecosystem, requiring robust financial infrastructure to support its mission. Working here means joining a fast-paced, mission-driven team where precision in finance directly enables impactful community organizing.

About the role

As the Finance & Compliance Director, you will be the sole owner of all financial operations, including day-to-day accounting, payroll, compliance, and reporting across multiple entities. You'll report directly to the Chief People Officer and work closely with executive leadership on strategic planning, fund allocations, and external relationships. This role is critical to ensuring RWB can scale its movement while maintaining the highest standards of financial integrity and regulatory compliance.

A typical day

A typical day might involve processing payroll, reconciling accounts, preparing financial reports for leadership, and ensuring compliance with regulatory filings. You'll also collaborate with external auditors, banks, and benefits providers, and use automation tools to streamline workflows. Expect to pivot between detailed accounting tasks and strategic conversations with the Chief People Officer and other executives.

Who Red Wine & Blue is looking for

  • A hands-on accounting professional with 7+ years of experience managing multi-entity nonprofit finances, including fund accounting, grant tracking, and compliance with 501(c)(3)/(c)(4) regulations.
  • Proven ability to independently run payroll, manage audits, and handle all day-to-day financial operations without a large team, ideally in a remote environment.
  • Tech-savvy and proactive, with experience implementing accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Bill.com, Gusto) and using emerging tools to automate workflows and scale processes.
  • Mission-aligned and detail-obsessed, comfortable working in a political advocacy space and committed to supporting a community of suburban women fighting extremism.

Tips for this application

  • Highlight your experience with multi-entity nonprofit accounting and compliance, specifically mentioning 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) regulations, as RWB likely operates both.
  • Emphasize your ability to work independently and own all financial functions—this role has no direct reports, so show you're a self-starter who thrives without a team.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with political or advocacy organizations; even if you haven't worked in politics, connect your finance skills to mission-driven work.
  • Show tech proficiency by naming specific accounting and payroll software you've implemented or optimized, and mention any automation you've introduced.
  • In your cover letter, explicitly reference RWB's mission and the Washington Post profile to show you've done your homework and are genuinely excited about their work.

What to cover in your cover letter

['Your track record of managing all finance and compliance functions for a multi-entity organization, including payroll, audits, and regulatory filings.', "Concrete examples of how you've used technology to streamline financial operations and scale workflows in a remote setting.", "Your alignment with RWB's mission and understanding of the unique financial needs of a political nonprofit community.", 'Your ability to partner with executive leadership on strategic financial planning and fund allocation, as this role supports the Chief People Officer and other leaders.']

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Focusing only on for-profit finance experience without addressing nonprofit fund accounting and compliance nuances.
  • Underestimating the need to work independently—this role has no direct reports, so avoid implying you need a team to get things done.
  • Ignoring the political context—showing no awareness of or alignment with RWB's mission could be a dealbreaker in a mission-driven organization.
