How to apply for Field Service Technician II – Solar
New Energy Equity (NEE)
About New Energy Equity (NEE)
New Energy Equity finances and develops solar projects and has installed over 330MW since 2013. The Field Service Technician II role sits within Energy Support Services, which keeps solar and energy storage systems safe and producing power.
About the role
You will work independently on advanced inspections, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting of solar and energy storage systems in high-voltage environments. You will also guide junior technicians on site and follow a defined pathway toward Technician III.
A typical day
You drive from your home to solar sites in and around St. Louis, typically 30–90 minutes away. On site you perform advanced inspections, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting in high-voltage environments, often without direct supervision, and you may guide junior technicians. Most days run 7am–3pm or 8am–4pm, with occasional Saturday on-call and under 10% overnight travel.
Who New Energy Equity (NEE) is looking for
- Has two or more years of serious hands-on technical work in any industry, with strong electrical and diagnostic skills.
- Lives within commuting distance of St. Louis, Missouri, or is actively relocating there at their own expense before the start date.
- Can work outdoors on solar sites, drive 30–90 minutes to job sites, and handle under 10% overnight travel.
- Is available Monday–Friday, 7am–3pm or 8am–4pm, with rotational Saturday on-call from 8am–12pm, and can work 40–45 hours typical with overtime paid at 1.5x over 40.
Tips for this application
- State your St. Louis location or your specific relocation plan and date in the first lines of your resume and cover letter, because applications from candidates not in or relocating to the area cannot be considered.
- Describe your electrical and diagnostic experience with concrete examples, such as voltage levels worked on, test equipment used, and types of faults you diagnosed.
- Mention any solar or energy storage experience, but do not treat it as required; highlight transferable hands-on technical work instead.
- Confirm you can meet the field schedule: M–F 7am–3pm or 8am–4pm, rotational Saturday on-call, and driving 30–90 minutes to sites.
- Avoid saying you want a remote or work-from-home role, because this position is on-site and field-based.
What to cover in your cover letter
['Your location in or active relocation to the St. Louis area, with a clear start date.', 'Two or more years of hands-on technical work and your strongest electrical and diagnostic skills.', 'Your ability to work independently in high-voltage environments without direct supervision.', 'Your willingness to guide junior technicians and follow the pathway toward Technician III.']
Draft a cover letterResearch before applying
- Review New Energy Equity's installed capacity and project types, including the over 330MW installed since 2013.
- Look up Energy Support Services and what it does for solar and energy storage systems.
- Check the typical solar site layout and equipment in the St. Louis area to understand the field environment.
- Find out what the Technician II to Technician III pathway involves by asking the hiring team directly.
Likely interview topics
Based on the job description, expect questions about:
- Describe a time you diagnosed and fixed an electrical fault without direct supervision.
- How do you approach safety when working in high-voltage environments?
- What experience do you have guiding or mentoring junior technicians on site?
- Are you able to work the M–F 7am–3pm or 8am–4pm schedule, the rotational Saturday on-call, and drive 30–90 minutes to job sites?
- What do you know about New Energy Equity and Energy Support Services, and why do you want to work on solar and energy storage systems?
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying without living in or actively relocating to the St. Louis area, since those applications cannot be considered.
- Assuming field-based means remote or work-from-home; it means driving from home to job sites.
- Focusing only on solar experience when the job says solar experience helps but is not required, and strong electrical and diagnostic skills are.
