How to apply for Energy Scheduling & Portfolio Lead

Anthropic

About Anthropic

Anthropic is a frontier AI research and product company working on alignment, policy, and security. It posts specific high-impact opportunities, and notes it does not necessarily recommend working at other positions there. Candidates should read its stated concerns about doing harm by working at a frontier AI company before applying.

About the role

This role owns energy availability across Anthropic's non-cloud data center portfolio: contracted and available energy against planned compute, and the risk to it. You schedule and manage physical energy delivery, including gas scheduling, and act as counterpart to LSEs, QSEs, scheduling coordinators, and suppliers across electricity and gas markets. You are the first dedicated owner of this function and will build its models and processes from zero.

A typical day

A typical day likely involves checking the live view of energy availability against planned compute, coordinating with LSEs, QSEs, scheduling coordinators, or suppliers on physical delivery, and managing ESA counterparty performance. You would also work with workload and site planning, energy origination, and data center operations to keep supply and the workload plan in step. Since this is a new function, much of the work is building the models and processes that do not yet exist. Ask the hiring team how the role splits between live scheduling and building the function.

Who Anthropic is looking for

  • Has hands-on experience scheduling physical energy delivery in electricity and gas markets, not just trading financial instruments.
  • Has worked directly with LSEs, QSEs, scheduling coordinators, or suppliers across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Can manage ESA counterparties who operate behind-the-meter plants, including their performance and Anthropic's exposure.
  • Is comfortable building scheduling and portfolio models and processes from scratch as the first owner of the function.

Tips for this application

  • Name the specific market roles you have worked with (LSE, QSE, scheduling coordinator, supplier) and the jurisdictions, since the role spans multiple.
  • Describe physical scheduling work you have done, such as gas nomination or delivery scheduling, and separate it from any financial trading experience.
  • Explain how you have managed ESA counterparty performance and exposure, including what you measured and how you acted on it.
  • Show one example of a model or process you built from zero for energy availability or portfolio risk, including the inputs and how it was used.
  • Read Anthropic's stated concerns about working at a frontier AI company and address in your own words why you want this specific role.

What to cover in your cover letter

['Your direct experience as a counterpart to LSEs, QSEs, scheduling coordinators, and suppliers in electricity and gas markets.', 'How you have scheduled physical energy delivery, including gas scheduling, and kept supply in step with a demand or workload plan.', 'How you have managed behind-the-meter plant operators (ESA counterparties) and the exposure that comes with their performance.', "What you would build first as the initial owner of this function, given the role's mandate to create models and processes from zero."]

Research before applying

  • Read Anthropic's mission page and its stated concerns about doing harm by working at a frontier AI company, linked in the job posting.
  • Understand what non-cloud data centers are and why energy availability is a constraint for compute planning.
  • Learn the roles of LSEs, QSEs, scheduling coordinators, and suppliers in the electricity and gas markets where Anthropic operates.
  • Check what Anthropic has published about its compute, data center, or energy plans, and note what is not public.

Likely interview topics

Based on the job description, expect questions about:

  • How you would build the live view of energy availability risk and energy availability need for workload management from zero.
  • A specific example of scheduling physical gas or electricity delivery across jurisdictions and how you handled a disruption.
  • How you would manage ESA counterparties operating behind-the-meter plants and quantify Anthropic's exposure to their performance.
  • How you would keep energy supply and the workload plan in step with workload and site planning, energy origination, and data center operations.
  • What structures and processes you would put in place to eventually support asset management across the energy portfolio.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Presenting financial trading or hedging experience as if it were physical energy scheduling; the role explicitly excludes financial instruments.
  • Ignoring the multi-jurisdiction aspect and describing experience in only one market or region.
  • Applying without addressing Anthropic's stated concerns about working at a frontier AI company, since the posting links them directly.

Deadline

No deadline is listed. Roles without a deadline usually close once the employer has enough candidates, so apply soon if you are interested.
