How to apply for Donor Relations & Events Manager (Nonprofit Events & Donor Engagement)
Friends of the Arava Institute
About Friends of the Arava Institute
Friends of the Arava Institute (FAI) supports the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, a unique organization where students and researchers from Israel, Palestine, Jordan, and beyond collaborate on environmental solutions. Working at FAI means contributing to a mission of cross-border cooperation and sustainability, and helping to build a peaceful, environmentally secure future. The organization offers a dynamic, mission-driven work environment with opportunities for domestic and international travel.
About the role
As the Donor Relations & Events Manager, you will be the architect of meaningful experiences that connect donors to the Institute's work. You will plan and execute fundraising, donor-facing, and community events, managing everything from logistics and budgets to vendors and volunteers. Your efforts will directly strengthen donor relationships and build support for environmental cooperation in the Middle East.
A typical day
A typical day might involve coordinating with vendors for an upcoming donor reception, updating the donor database, and meeting with the Director of Development to strategize outreach for a major fundraising campaign. You might also review event budgets, draft donor communications, and collaborate with colleagues in Israel to align on messaging. Occasionally, you'll travel to events or site visits, ensuring every detail is executed flawlessly to create a memorable experience for supporters.
Who Friends of the Arava Institute is looking for
- 3-5 years of experience in event planning, donor relations, or fundraising, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
- Proven ability to manage event logistics, budgets, and vendor relationships from conception to execution.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with experience engaging donors and volunteers.
- Passion for environmental issues and cross-cultural cooperation, with comfort working across time zones and traveling domestically and internationally.
- Self-starter who thrives in a remote/hybrid environment and can collaborate effectively with a small, distributed team.
Tips for this application
- Highlight specific events you've planned end-to-end, including budget size, attendee numbers, and fundraising outcomes, to demonstrate your ability to handle the full event lifecycle.
- Emphasize any experience working with donors or volunteers, especially in a fundraising context, as this role is heavily donor-facing.
- Show your passion for the Arava Institute's mission by referencing their cross-border environmental work in your cover letter or resume summary.
- If you're in the Greater Boston area, mention your ability to work on-site 3 days/week, as this is a preference.
- Demonstrate comfort with remote work tools and processes, as the role is remote/hybrid and involves collaboration with international colleagues.
What to cover in your cover letter
['Your track record of planning and executing successful events, particularly fundraising or donor engagement events, with measurable results.', "Your ability to build and maintain relationships with donors, volunteers, and vendors, and how you've stewarded these relationships to deepen engagement.", 'Your connection to the mission of environmental cooperation and peacebuilding in the Middle East, and why this specific organization resonates with you.', 'Your experience managing budgets, logistics, and multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, and your comfort with travel and remote collaboration.']

- How do you approach donor stewardship and engagement before, during, and after an event?
- Describe a challenging event logistics issue you faced and how you resolved it.
- How would you engage donors who are passionate about environmental cooperation but may have differing political views?
