How to apply for Director of Transmission & Interconnection

Oklo

About Oklo

Oklo is developing next-generation fast fission technology and recycling nuclear waste to provide clean, reliable, affordable energy. The company is focused on deploying these reactors, which means grid interconnection is central to whether projects move forward. Working here puts you at the intersection of advanced nuclear and the practical work of getting power onto the grid.

About the role

This role owns Oklo's grid interconnection strategy across all development sites and manages a team of Senior Interconnection Specialists and Analysts. You serve as the primary interface with RTOs, ISOs, and utilities for the Development organization, reporting to the VP of Origination & Energy Strategy. Interconnection queue positions and transmission study outcomes directly affect project viability, cost, and timeline, so this position shapes which projects can proceed and when.

A typical day

You might spend the morning on a call with an RTO about a cluster study timeline, then review a GIA redline with your team in the afternoon. You could also coordinate with the Director of Project Development on schedule integration or respond to a new FERC rule change that affects your queue positions. The mix depends on where each project sits in the interconnection process.

Who Oklo is looking for

  • Has hands-on experience managing FERC, RTO/ISO, and utility interconnection processes across multiple active projects at once.
  • Has negotiated Generator Interconnection Agreements (GIAs) and related transmission or distribution agreements.
  • Can lead transmission feasibility and impact studies and coordinate third-party consultants doing that work.
  • Tracks and responds to FERC Order 2023 and evolving interconnection rule changes, and can explain how those changes affect a project portfolio.
  • Has managed or is ready to manage Senior Interconnection Specialists and Analysts, and can align interconnection timelines with project development schedules.

Tips for this application

  • Name the specific RTOs and ISOs you have worked with (for example MISO, PJM, SPP, ERCOT, WECC, CAISO) and the number of projects you managed in each.
  • Describe at least one GIA you negotiated from start to finish, including the queue position, study outcomes, and any cost or timeline challenges you resolved.
  • Show familiarity with FERC Order 2023 by explaining how it changed your approach to queue entry timing, study management, or cluster processing.
  • Explain how you have coordinated with project development teams to align interconnection milestones with overall project schedules.
  • If you have managed a team, state the team size, roles, and how you structured the work across multiple simultaneous projects.

What to cover in your cover letter

Explain your direct experience with RTO/ISO interconnection processes and name the specific regions where you have worked. Describe a GIA you negotiated and the outcome. Show how you have managed multiple active projects at once and how you prioritized among them. State your experience with FERC Order 2023 or other interconnection rule changes and how you adapted your strategy. If you have managed Senior Interconnection Specialists or Analysts, describe how you organized and led that team.

Draft a cover letter

Research before applying

  • Oklo's reactor technology and deployment plans, including where their development sites are located and which RTOs or ISOs those sites fall under.
  • FERC Order 2023 and any recent rule changes or pending proceedings that affect interconnection queues.
  • Oklo's current project pipeline and any public announcements about site selection, partnerships, or timelines.
  • The specific RTOs and ISOs where Oklo is likely to interconnect, and their current queue processes and backlogs.

Likely interview topics

Based on the job description, expect questions about:

  • Walk through an interconnection project you managed from queue entry through GIA execution. What were the key milestones and where did it go off track?
  • How has FERC Order 2023 changed your approach to queue entry timing and study management?
  • Describe a time you had to negotiate a GIA with terms that were unfavorable to your project. How did you handle it?
  • How do you align interconnection timelines with project development schedules when study results come back later than expected?
  • How would you build and manage a team of Senior Interconnection Specialists and Analysts across multiple active projects in different RTOs?
Practise interview questions

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Speaking only in general terms about interconnection without naming specific RTOs, ISOs, or projects you have worked on.
  • Focusing only on technical study work and ignoring GIA negotiation, FERC rule changes, or team management responsibilities that this role requires.
  • Applying without any knowledge of Oklo's technology or how advanced nuclear projects differ from renewable or gas interconnection projects.
