How to Apply for Director of Product, Customer Experience
at Voltus
🏢 About Voltus
Voltus is at the forefront of the clean energy transition, connecting distributed energy resources (like solar, batteries, and demand response) to create a more resilient and flexible grid. As a remote-first company with a mission-driven culture, Voltus offers the opportunity to have a tangible impact on combating climate change while working with a passionate team.
About This Role
As Director of Product, Customer Experience, you will own the product strategy for the entire customer journey—from dispatch and performance to settlement and financial experiences. This is a high-impact role where you'll transform a historically high-touch, service-led model into a scalable, self-serve product, directly enabling Voltus to grow its customer base and accelerate grid decarbonization.
💡 A Day in the Life
Your day might start with a standup with your PM team to review progress on dispatch and settlement product features, followed by a cross-functional meeting with engineering and energy markets to align on a new metering data integration. In the afternoon, you'd dive into user research findings to refine the self-serve portal roadmap, then wrap up by coaching a PM on their product brief for executive review.
🚀 Application Tools
🎯 Who Voltus Is Looking For
- 10+ years of Product Management experience with at least 3 years leading and scaling PM teams in a high-growth, fast-paced environment.
- Deep expertise in energy markets—specifically demand response, DER participation, energy storage, or grid services—and fluency in the economic drivers of energy transactions.
- Proven track record of shipping customer-facing products at scale, especially turning data-intensive, financially driven relationships into self-serve experiences.
- Player-coach mindset: able to both set strategic direction and dive into details with the team, while fostering a culture of ownership, velocity, and customer obsession.
📝 Tips for Applying to Voltus
In your resume and cover letter, explicitly call out your experience with energy markets (demand response, DER, grid services) and quantify your impact (e.g., 'Led product that increased customer self-service adoption by 40%').
Showcase your 'player-coach' leadership style by describing specific examples where you both mentored PMs and personally contributed to high-stakes product decisions.
Tailor your portfolio or case studies to highlight products that transitioned high-touch services to self-serve, especially in fintech or energy contexts.
Research Voltus's current product offerings (e.g., their platform for DER aggregation) and mention how you would enhance the customer experience in your application.
Emphasize your ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, design, energy markets, and executive teams—include examples of managing complex stakeholder alignment.
✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter
["Your passion for combating climate change through grid flexibility and how Voltus's mission aligns with your career goals.", 'Your deep understanding of energy markets and how that expertise will help you build products that optimize customer financial outcomes.', 'Your experience scaling customer-facing products from high-touch to self-serve, with concrete metrics.', "Your leadership philosophy as a player-coach, including how you've grown PM teams and fostered a culture of ownership."]

- → Understand the current challenges in the DER space: regulatory variability, data integration, and customer education. Identify how Voltus differentiates.
- → Familiarize yourself with the key competitors (e.g., Enel X, Stem, Autogrid) and Voltus's unique value proposition in customer experience.
- → Review Voltus's blog or press releases for recent product launches or partnerships that signal their product priorities.
💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics
Based on this role, you may be asked about:
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying with a generic product management resume that doesn't highlight energy market expertise or customer self-serve experience.
- Failing to demonstrate a player-coach leadership style—only emphasizing either strategic or tactical work without showing both.
- Not understanding the financial and regulatory nuances of energy markets—be prepared to discuss how settlement and performance impact customer experience.
