How to Apply for Director of Industry Partnerships

at Spring Innovation Fund

🏢 About Spring Innovation Fund

Spring Innovation Fund is a unique venture philanthropy fund that combines the resources of a venture capital firm with the mission-driven focus of a nonprofit. We incubate and back startups that are developing cutting-edge technology to improve farmed animal welfare, a rapidly growing and impactful field. Working here means you'll be at the forefront of driving humane innovation in the aquaculture industry, with the support of a dedicated team and the potential to make a real difference for billions of animals.

About This Role

As the Director of Industry Partnerships, you will be the linchpin between Spring's portfolio companies and the aquaculture industry. You'll build and manage relationships with key players, from producers to retailers, to accelerate the adoption of humane technologies. Your work will directly shape company strategies, open doors for pilots and commercial deployments, and ultimately transform the aquaculture supply chain to be more ethical and sustainable.

💡 A Day in the Life

A typical day might start with a call with a portfolio company to discuss their partnership needs, followed by a virtual meeting with a major aquaculture producer to pitch a trial of a new humane technology. You might spend the afternoon analyzing industry reports to identify market gaps, then draft a strategic plan for connecting a startup with a retailer. Evenings could involve networking at a virtual industry event or preparing for a presentation to a trade group.

📝 Tips for Applying to Spring Innovation Fund

1

Tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight your specific aquaculture industry experience, using concrete examples of partnerships you've built and deals you've closed.

2

Research Spring Innovation Fund's portfolio companies and mention how your experience could help one of them scale or succeed.

3

Show that you understand the unique venture philanthropy model and are passionate about animal welfare, not just the business opportunity.

4

In your cover letter, quantify your impact (e.g., 'Increased adoption of a new technology by 30% among producers').

5

Since the role is remote, emphasize your ability to work independently and manage relationships across time zones and cultures.

✉️ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

- Your deep understanding of the aquaculture industry's challenges and opportunities, and why humane technology is the next big trend. - Specific examples of how you've built successful partnerships that led to commercial adoption or industry change. - Your alignment with Spring's mission and your motivation to work in a venture philanthropy setting. - How your network and experience can directly benefit Spring's portfolio companies, possibly mentioning a specific company.

💬 Prepare for These Interview Topics

Based on this role, you may be asked about:

1 Describe a time you convinced a conservative industry player to adopt a new technology. What was your approach?
2 How would you identify and prioritize potential partners for a portfolio company that has a novel humane stunning device?
3 What are the biggest barriers to adopting humane aquaculture technology, and how would you overcome them?
4 How do you stay updated on aquaculture industry trends and key stakeholders?
5 Why are you interested in working for a venture philanthropy fund instead of a traditional for-profit company?

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don't submit a generic cover letter that could apply to any partnership role; make sure to emphasize your aquaculture expertise and passion for animal welfare.
  • Avoid focusing solely on your sales or business development skills without demonstrating a deep understanding of the technical and operational aspects of aquaculture.
  • Don't underestimate the importance of the mission-driven aspect; this is a philanthropy, so candidates who seem purely profit-driven may not be a good fit.
