How to apply for Director, Editorial & Media Relations

Inflection Point Agency

About Inflection Point Agency

Inflection Point Agency (IPA) is a boutique, global agency founded in 2017 that exclusively serves clients accelerating the green and blue economy, from clean energy and climate tech to ocean conservation and sustainable transportation. As a certified 1% for the Planet member and Clean Creatives signatory, IPA walks its talk on environmental responsibility, making it a magnet for purpose-driven communications professionals. Working here means shaping narratives that directly advance climate solutions with a diverse roster of nonprofits, startups, major tech and automotive companies, utilities, investors, and government agencies.

About the role

This newly created Director of Editorial & Media Relations role is a leadership position that unifies owned, earned, and paid media strategies for IPA’s client-partners across the green and blue economy. You’ll set high-level content strategy, manage a team of editorial, media relations, and social media professionals, and interface directly with clients—while still rolling up your sleeves to ghostwrite, edit, pitch, and execute campaigns. It’s a chance to shape the agency’s integrated media offering and drive measurable impact for mission-driven organizations.

A typical day

Your day might start with a client call to align on a thought leadership op-ed, followed by editing a draft from a team member and pitching it to a target outlet. In between, you’ll review paid social ad copy for a climate tech startup, mentor a junior staffer on media outreach, and strategize with IPA leadership on new business proposals. Expect a mix of high-level planning and hands-on execution, all in service of accelerating the green and blue economy.

Who Inflection Point Agency is looking for

  • 10+ years of experience in editorial, media relations, and/or content strategy, with at least 3 years managing teams and client relationships in an agency or in-house communications setting.
  • Deep familiarity with sustainability, climate tech, clean energy, or ocean conservation sectors—either through direct work or demonstrated passion and knowledge.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute integrated campaigns across owned (blogs, reports, social), earned (press, podcasts, events), and paid (digital ads, sponsored content) media.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with a portfolio that includes ghostwritten thought leadership, press releases, and bylines for executives or organizations.
  • Comfortable working remotely and asynchronously, with strong self-direction and the ability to juggle multiple client accounts and deadlines.

Tips for this application

  • Tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight specific campaigns or content you’ve led in climate, clean energy, or ocean conservation—IPA’s clients are all in these spaces, so generic PR experience won’t stand out.
  • Show your fluency across owned, earned, and paid media by describing how you’ve integrated these disciplines in past roles, ideally with metrics (e.g., “grew organic traffic 40% while securing 20+ top-tier placements”).
  • Demonstrate your ability to manage and mentor a team: mention how you’ve structured workflows, trained junior staff, or led cross-functional collaboration in a remote environment.
  • Include a link to a portfolio or writing samples that feature ghostwritten op-eds, press releases, or social campaigns for sustainability-focused clients or causes.
  • In your cover letter, explicitly reference IPA’s values (1% for the Planet, Clean Creatives) and explain why you’re excited to work at a boutique agency that exclusively serves the green and blue economy.

What to cover in your cover letter

1. Your track record of leading integrated media strategies across owned, earned, and paid channels for climate, clean energy, or ocean-focused organizations. 2. A specific example of how you’ve managed a team while also executing hands-on work like ghostwriting, editing, or pitching. 3. Your familiarity with the sectors IPA serves (e.g., smart grids, EVs, ocean conservation) and your ability to translate technical topics into compelling stories. 4. Why IPA’s boutique, mission-driven model appeals to you and how you’d contribute to its growth.

  • Research IPA’s certifications and commitments (1% for the Planet, Clean Creatives) and be prepared to discuss how those align with your personal values.
  • Look up recent news or reports about the green and blue economy sectors IPA mentions (e.g., smart grids, ocean conservation, EV charging) to speak knowledgeably about trends.
  • Check out the LinkedIn profiles of current IPA team members to get a sense of their backgrounds and the agency’s culture.

Likely interview topics

Based on the job description, expect questions about:

  • How would you approach building an integrated media strategy for a client that spans owned, earned, and paid—can you walk us through a past example?
  • Describe your experience managing and mentoring a remote team of writers, PR specialists, and social media managers. How do you ensure quality and consistency?
  • Tell us about a time you had to quickly get up to speed on a complex climate tech or ocean conservation topic to craft messaging. How did you ensure accuracy and resonance?
  • How do you measure success across owned, earned, and paid media? What KPIs do you prioritize for mission-driven clients?
  • Why do you want to work at a boutique agency like IPA, and how would you handle the balance between high-level strategy and hands-on execution?

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Submitting a generic cover letter or resume that doesn’t mention sustainability, climate, or ocean conservation—IPA is niche and will notice if you haven’t tailored your application.
  • Overemphasizing strategy without demonstrating hands-on skills; this role requires both, so avoid giving the impression you’re only interested in high-level planning.
  • Neglecting to mention remote work experience or asynchronous collaboration; IPA is remote-first, so show you thrive in that environment.
  • Failing to provide writing samples or a portfolio; for an editorial and media relations role, proof of your writing and pitching ability is essential.
