How to apply for Compute Country Lead, Canada

Anthropic

About Anthropic

Anthropic is a frontier AI research and product company working on alignment, policy, and security. The company posts specific high-impact opportunities and is explicit that it does not recommend working at other positions there. Candidates should read Anthropic's own note on the risks of working at a frontier AI lab before applying.

About the role

This role is the single accountable owner of Anthropic's compute strategy in Canada, responsible for bringing gigawatts of compute online. You lead a cross-functional team of specialists in site selection, leasing, energy, financing, government relations and policy, community engagement, construction, and operations. The specialist functions are hired and managed centrally from San Francisco, so you must drive accountability without formal authority over them.

A typical day

The job post does not describe a daily routine, so ask about it in interviews. Expect the role to involve coordinating several workstreams at once, meeting with functional leads in San Francisco, and representing Anthropic to Canadian government and industry counterparts. Because the team is hired and managed centrally, much of the work is likely influence and accountability rather than direct management.

Who Anthropic is looking for

  • Has led large infrastructure or energy programs end to end, ideally data center, power, or industrial buildout at gigawatt scale.
  • Can coordinate leasing, energy, policy, finance, construction, and operations workstreams at once and hold each to deadlines.
  • Has direct experience representing a company to Canadian government, regulators, utilities, and industry counterparts.
  • Is comfortable with high ambiguity and high trust, and can create structure without formal authority over the team.

Tips for this application

  • Name the exact scale you have delivered before (megawatts or gigawatts, number of sites, dollar value) in the first paragraph of your resume summary.
  • Show one concrete example of driving a cross-functional team where the specialists did not report to you.
  • List specific Canadian jurisdictions, utilities, or regulators you have worked with, since the role is Canada-based and remote.
  • Read Anthropic's 80,000 Hours career review and address its concerns about working at a frontier AI lab in your cover letter.
  • Explain how you would coordinate with functional leads based in San Francisco, since those leads own hiring and management of your team.

What to cover in your cover letter

['Your track record of bringing large compute or energy infrastructure online, with numbers.', 'How you lead cross-functional experts without formal authority, with a specific example.', 'Your existing relationships and knowledge of Canadian government, energy, and industry stakeholders.', 'Why you want to work at Anthropic specifically, and how you think about the risks of working at a frontier AI lab.']

Likely interview topics

Based on the job description, expect questions about:

  • How you would sequence site selection, energy procurement, leasing, and construction for a first Canadian compute site.
  • A time you drove a team of specialists who did not report to you and how you handled a missed deadline.
  • How you would represent Anthropic to a Canadian provincial government or utility.
  • How you would work with functional leads in San Francisco who hire and manage your in-country team.
  • Your view on the concerns raised about working at a frontier AI company and why you are applying anyway.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying as a generalist operator without showing infrastructure, energy, or data center delivery at scale.
  • Ignoring the central-management structure and implying you would build and manage your own team in Canada.
  • Skipping any engagement with the ethical concerns Anthropic itself raises about working at a frontier AI lab.

Deadline

No deadline is listed. Roles without a deadline usually close once the employer has enough candidates, so apply soon if you are interested.
