Community Organizer

As a Community Organizer at Rhizome, you will:

• Recruit, onboard, and support teams of high-school aged Civic Service Fellows to lead civic actions in their communities.
• Work both virtually and in-person to build community, provide regular training, and guide Fellows in organizing and increasing civic engagement.
• Support 5-7 teams of Fellows across local high schools in a particular urban, suburban, or rural community.

This role directly activates young people’s identities into action, helping youth treat civic service as the work of a lifetime and building collective power to create a safer, happier, healthier world.

Ideal candidates bring:

• Community organizing experience: demonstrable track record of organizing a group around a goal, campaign development, or volunteer mobilization.
• Experience in youth engagement: working directly with and engaging young people (high school aged and up) in meaningful ways.
• Strong communications skills: excellent written and verbal communication, ability to speak with adult and youth audiences effectively.
• Understanding of social justice issues: can clearly articulate why community engagement and civic responsibility is important.

Compensation: $18/hour, working an average of 6 hours/week (6.5 hours/week July-November and January-March, 4 hours/week in November and April). Includes 2 unpaid mental health breaks (office closures) in December/January and May/June. All travel costs covered for the in-person gathering August 6-10.

Rhizome is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit co-founded by 90 young people in 2021, dedicated to building collective power for young people to create a safer, happier, healthier world through civic engagement and service.
