How to Apply for Community Organizer

at Rhizome

๐Ÿข About Rhizome

Rhizome was co-founded by 90 young people in 2021, making it a youth-led nonprofit that prioritizes the voices and agency of the next generation. Its mission to build collective power for young people through civic engagement and service is both timely and impactful, offering a unique opportunity to work in a flat, mission-driven organization.

About This Role

As a Community Organizer, you will recruit and support high-school aged Civic Service Fellows, guiding them to lead civic actions in their communities. This role is impactful because it directly empowers young people to become change-makers, with the potential to shape civic engagement patterns in underserved areas.

๐Ÿ’ก A Day in the Life

A typical day might involve a morning virtual check-in with your Fellow team leaders, followed by an afternoon planning session for an upcoming voter registration drive. You might spend time recruiting new Fellows via school partnerships, then host an evening training on community organizing tactics via Zoom.

๐ŸŽฏ Who Rhizome Is Looking For

  • Has a demonstrable track record of organizing groups around goals, such as campaign development or volunteer mobilization.
  • Possesses direct experience working with high-school aged youth in meaningful, empowering ways.
  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to engage both adult and youth audiences effectively.
  • Understands social justice principles and can apply them to youth-led civic engagement work.

๐Ÿ“ Tips for Applying to Rhizome

1

Highlight specific examples of organizing campaigns you led, including metrics like number of volunteers recruited or actions taken.

2

Showcase any experience with youth programs, especially those involving training or mentoring high school students.

3

Tailor your resume to emphasize remote collaboration tools (e.g., Slack, Zoom, Notion) and virtual community-building.

4

In your cover letter, explicitly connect your organizing experience to Rhizome's mission of youth-led civic engagement.

5

Research Rhizome's current campaigns or Fellow projects and mention how your skills could support them.

โœ‰๏ธ What to Emphasize in Your Cover Letter

['Your commitment to youth empowerment and social justice, with specific examples.', 'Your experience in community organizing, especially with measurable outcomes.', 'Your ability to work independently in a remote, part-time role while managing multiple teams.', 'Your familiarity with the communities Rhizome serves (urban, suburban, rural) and how you would adapt your approach.']
