How to apply for Chief Program Officer

Island Conservation

About Island Conservation

Island Conservation is the only international nonprofit exclusively dedicated to restoring islands for nature and people, combining invasive species removal with community livelihood improvements and climate resilience. Working here means joining a global, multidisciplinary team that turns ambitious conservation goals into measurable outcomes on islands worldwide. The organization offers a rare chance to lead at the intersection of biodiversity, oceans, and human well-being.

About the role

As Chief Program Officer, you will lead the performance, integration, and delivery of Island Conservation’s global program portfolio, overseeing senior leaders across Impact & Innovation, Partnerships, Operations, Latin America, and the Pacific. Reporting to the CEO and serving on the Executive Leadership Team, you will translate strategy into action, align leaders, and focus resources on the highest-impact opportunities. This role is central to ensuring that commitments become tangible conservation results.

A typical day

A typical day might involve meeting with regional directors to review program progress, analyzing resource allocation across the portfolio, and collaborating with the CEO and Executive Leadership Team on strategic priorities. You could also represent Island Conservation in a partnership call or review impact metrics to ensure commitments are on track. Expect a blend of internal leadership, external engagement, and data-driven decision-making.

Who Island Conservation is looking for

  • Proven executive leadership in a global conservation or environmental nonprofit, with experience managing senior leaders across geographies and disciplines.
  • Deep understanding of island-marine ecosystem restoration, including invasive species management, native species recovery, and community engagement.
  • Strong track record of turning strategy into measurable outcomes, with expertise in program design, resource allocation, and performance management.
  • Exceptional collaboration and communication skills, able to align diverse stakeholders and drive execution in a remote, multicultural environment.

Tips for this application

  • Highlight your experience leading global, multidisciplinary teams in conservation or a related field, specifically noting how you aligned senior leaders across regions.
  • Quantify your impact: include metrics such as hectares restored, species recovered, or communities engaged to demonstrate your ability to deliver measurable outcomes.
  • Familiarize yourself with Island Conservation’s holistic approach—invasive species removal, community livelihoods, climate resilience—and weave this language into your application.
  • Emphasize your ability to work remotely and manage across time zones, as this role is remote and oversees teams in Latin America and the Pacific.
  • Address the CPO’s dual focus: internal leadership and external representation. Show how you’ve balanced both in previous roles.
