How to apply for Business Development Account Manager (Southeast)
Velo3D
About Velo3D
Velo3D builds metal 3D printing systems for the energy and transportation sectors. The company focuses on moving additive manufacturing from prototyping to full-scale production. This role sits at the point where that transition happens for customers.
About the role
You will be the dedicated account manager and technical engineer for target customers in the Southeast. Your job is to guide those accounts from early concept through prototype and into full-scale production on Sapphire systems. You work with the customer's manufacturing and engineering teams, plus Velo3D's Applications Engineering and Field Management, to solve production problems and drive adoption.
A typical day
You might spend the morning on a call with a customer's engineering team to review a part design for production on a Sapphire system. In the afternoon you could be on-site at a target account working through a production challenge with their manufacturing team and Velo3D's applications engineers. Some days are spent coordinating with field management on logistics to keep a customer's production adoption on schedule.
Who Velo3D is looking for
- Has hands-on experience in design engineering and manufacturing engineering, not just sales.
- Has managed technical programs or accounts where the goal was production adoption, not just a one-time sale.
- Can work with customer engineering teams on part production challenges and explain a manufacturing path forward.
- Is based in or willing to travel across the Southeast to work on-site with target accounts.
Tips for this application
- In your resume, list specific programs where you took a part from design to production. Name the customer, the part, and the outcome.
- Mention any experience with metal additive manufacturing, especially laser powder bed fusion or systems like Sapphire.
- Show that you have worked directly with manufacturing and engineering teams at customer sites, not just from a remote sales office.
- If you have used CRM or project management tools to track account progress, name them and describe how you used them.
- Address the Southeast territory directly. State your location and willingness to travel within the region.
What to cover in your cover letter
Explain a time you guided a customer from prototype to production and what you did to make that happen. Describe your technical background in design or manufacturing engineering and how it helps you solve part production problems. State why you want to work on metal additive manufacturing for energy and transportation. Confirm you are based in or can cover the Southeast territory.
Draft a cover letterResearch before applying
- Read Velo3D's materials on the Sapphire system and its end-to-end manufacturing solution, including any case studies in energy or transportation.
- Find out which companies in the Southeast are using or evaluating metal additive manufacturing for production parts.
- Look up Velo3D's recent news, earnings calls, or press releases to understand current priorities and customer wins.
- Check LinkedIn for current Velo3D account managers or applications engineers to see their backgrounds and how they describe the role.
Likely interview topics
Based on the job description, expect questions about:
- Walk through a program where you were the main technical contact for a customer from concept to production.
- How would you help a customer move a part from prototype to full-scale production on a Sapphire system?
- Describe a time you worked with applications engineering or field management to solve a difficult production issue.
- What do you know about Velo3D's end-to-end manufacturing solution and how it differs from other metal 3D printing systems?
- How would you measure success in the first year for a target account in the Southeast?
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying with a sales-only background and no evidence of design or manufacturing engineering experience.
- Writing a cover letter that talks about additive manufacturing in general without mentioning Velo3D's specific system or production focus.
- Ignoring the Southeast territory requirement or failing to state your location and travel ability.
